Keefe After the Battle in Lodestar

Switches between Keefe's POV and Finan's POV

-Keefe-

I knew I was making a mistake. I saw the look in Foster's eyes as I moved across the room. However, I raised my crystal to the light and leaped away. It was the least that I could do. After all, I was the one who was to blame for all this, anyway. And as far as I know, everything I had tried to do to help had been useless.

As soon as I solidified into the hideout, though, I knew it wasn't just my personal life that was going to take the hit.

Fintan was there, waiting for me.

And he looked extra murderer-y.

-Fintan-

I saw the Sencen boy glitter into sight and gritted my teeth. He was alone. Where was Ruy? And Brant? Why was Alvar unconscious?

He was going down.

"Give me one reason why I shouldn't burn off your arm."

Keefe paled. Then he paused. "I have the crystal to a Black Swan hideout," he told me quickly. He straightened up and tried to look victorious. But I saw a shadow pass across his face.

Regret.

I knew it. He wasn't fully committed. He never would be. Not as long as his friends were on the other side.

Surely you realize that switching sides means betraying your friends.

Yet he seemed to think he'd find a loophole. I made sure that he knew that sooner or later he'd have to commit. We had to get to Gisela's Nightfall and steal a Gorgodon. And Keefe was the key. But I knew he wasn't as vital as Gisela thought he was.

But I had to say, this newest sacrifice was far more than I thought he'd ever make. I grinned. Maybe he really was learning. But I doubted it.

"Do you, now?" I asked.

He nodded once. "I do."

I smiled coldly. "About time you showed your commitment. But this isn't enough." Nothing he would willingly do ever would be.

Keefe's shoulders fell. "What do you want from me?"

"So much more than you could ever realize. But that's beside the point."

"Is it, now?"

"Yes. And it would be far more than you would ever give." I let that settle in before I added, "For now."
