Fintan's POV

I came out of the human hotel room we were staying at in full gear, ready to start an exciting day of skiing. "Are we ready to hit the slopes?" I called into the lobby. But at the closest table were the rest of the Neverseen, plates of waffles in hand.

"You want to go this early?" Gethen whined, his mouth already full of waffles. "We wanted breakfast!"

"YES! The earlier the better!" I stamped my foot for extra meaning.

"My bad." Gisela said, not exactly looking sorry. But I was a leader, and I needed to lead. So that meant I couldn't throw Gisela off the building.

Gritting my teeth, I tried to remain poised as I gave instruction. "You have 8 minutes to get ready. Scatter!"

After a melancholy glance at his waffles, Gethen scampered towards our room, the others at his heels.

After nodding at them in approval, I looked at the waffles on the table and dug in. They would never know.

After what seemed like forever, we were finally on the slopes. Looking at the humans going down the super steep mountain, I shivered in my fabulous green ski coat.

"So, do I wait in line..." I shuddered. "For that flying chair thing?" Humans probably didn't have the safest inventions, so I had good reason to be nervous. I mean, I value my life.

Get it together, Fintan, I told myself. You got this. So, I channeled all my leader-y confidence as I told them, "I think Alvar should go first. He seemed so excited about it, and my job is to ensure the safety of all the members up the mountain."

Gisela pointed to a human sign with some sort of human lettering. "This says to get into groups of four."

"Alright, then. Gisela, Alvar, Trix, and Umber, you go first. Gethen, Ruy, and I will go second." Everyone nodded in approval, and we stepped in line. At last, it was my turn to get on the flying chair. Legs shaking, I sank into the padding.

"Put the bar down!" I heard Gisela call over her shoulder from the chair in front of us.

"This bar?" Gethen called back, reaching below us. "It isn't mov–AHHHHHHHH!" With a yelp, Gethen fell off the chair and into the snow below.

"GETHEN!!" I screamed.

"NOOOOOOOO!" Ruy bawled.

"STOP THE FLYING CHAIR!" I cried.

"I'm fine," Gethen called up to us, struggling to get out of his elf-shaped hole in the snow.

"Levitate up!" I yelled.

"But there are humans watching!"

"I'll pretend I'm fishing and reel you in! They'll never know!"

Gethen flashed me the 'ok' sign, and I swung my hand back from my shoulder and put my hand outward like I had seen in those human fishing movies. Then I moved my hand in circles as Gethen slowly levitated up to our lift.

"Wow. Seamless. I'm sure no one knew." Ruy high fived me.

Gethen stared at me, starstruck. "My hero."

We were almost to the top of the mountain.

"That looks... steep." Ruy said.

I tried to answer him, but I was overwhelmed by what I saw in front of me.

Humans were getting off the floating chair while it was still moving and slid down a steep ramp to get to the slopes.

"Don't worry," I assured them, voice wavering. "We're strong."

The chair lurched around the corner, and the three of us slid off it.

"AHHHHHHHH!" We all screamed, and landed in a pile at the bottom of the ramp.

The lift slowed to a stop.

"YOU STOP THE CHAIR NOW?" Gethen bellowed.

Trying to untangle my skis, I got up from the pile, only to see hundreds of human eyes watching me. Plus Gisela, Alvar, Trix, and Umber, who had somehow gotten off unscathed. They did not look impressed.

The wind was beating us at 1,000 MPH.

Or maybe it was my heart.

Or maybe it was both.

Anyway, the seven of us were looking down the hill with increasing doubts. Except for Gisela. She just looked bored.

"Are you wimps ready to go yet?" She asked.

"Who are you calling a wimp, Gisela? We're ready. You're the one we're waiting for."

Gisela looked unconvinced. "Sure. Who wants to go first?" She sighed when no one raised their hand. "Really?"

"Hey. You know that the green circles are the hardest on the mountain. I'm just... getting my bearings." Alvar argued.

Gisela rolled her eyes. "Well, I'm done waiting for you losers." With that, she took skillfully down the mountain.

"I will go next." I said, straightening. "I'm the leader, after all. I will show you how it's done." Taking a few deep breaths to steady my nerves, I pushed my weight forward and headed down the mountain.

"AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH" I screamed as I barreled down the hill uncontrollably. Narrowly missing some nearby humans, my screams grew as I gathered more and more speed. It also didn't help to see Gisela pull into a graceful stop and laugh at me.

A ski patrol human blew a whistle. "That's a slow sign, BUDDY!" They yelled after me. But I couldn't have stopped even if I wanted to. So ramming into the slow sign seemed like my only option.

I landed on my backside. Hard. In the middle of the slope in front of all the humans and the rest of the Neverseen. With increasing momentum, I rolled down the hill and took the red-orange sign with me.

Finally, I landed at the base of the mountain.

Out of the corner of my eye, all I could see was red.

Gisela's POV

"BLOOD!" Fintan screamed, trying to move. But he was so tangled with his skis, I suspected it would take all of us to get Fintan off the ground. Not that it was my problem.

"It's the slow sign, Fintan." I told him.

His face turned as red as the sign. "Oh."

Alvar's POV

I knew Fintan was in trouble. I heard his screams as he barreled down the mountain. I needed to save him.

Bravely stepping forward, I told the rest of the Neverseen that I would go next. It was time for me to be a hero.

Fintan's POV

"FINTAN!" I heard someone call. "ARE YOU OKAY?"

"No. I think I broke something." I croaked.

"Don't be dramatic." Gisela told me. "You're fine."

I looked up to see both Alvar and Gisela hanging over

me. Alvar looked worried. Gisela less so. In fact, she almost looked downright gleeful as she tried tugging on one of my skis.

"Ready for another?" she asked with a particularly evil smirk.

I tried to act as if I was thinking. "I think I might sit this one out." I did my best attempt at confidence, but it was hard when I was all crumbled on the ground. "Have fun!"

"Should I call the ski patrol?" Alvar rushed to my side after Gisela had gone.

"No, No. I'm fine. I don't need a bunch of humans asking me questions." I tried lifting my foot, but it did not budge. "I could use some help, though."
