Gethen's POV during a meeting with the Neverseen. Takes place during Everblaze.
"First order of business," Lady Gisela announced. "I know what the Black Swan are planning!"
"What? How could you possibly know that!" Fintan scoffed.
"My son is with the Black Swan, which gets more and more useful by the day. So—"
"How many times do I have to tell you," Fintan snorted. "Your son. Isn't. Important. You're losing sight of our actual issues, Gisela. You might be more obsessed with you son as much as I am with Noxflares."
Gisela's eyes narrowed. "My son is important. And if you'd listen to what I'm planning for him, you'd believe it too."
"And I believe we've gotten off track," I said. "We should listen to what Gisela learned, not whatever nonsense you are arguing about. Though it is mildly amusing."
"The Black Swan are planning an ambush on Mt. Everest." Gisela informed us.
"Ridiculous," Fintan laughed. "No one can breathe up there!"
"Actually," I cut in. "We can use stabilizers." I looked at everyone's faces.
"You didn't figure it out already? That's hilarious!" I snickered.
"How do you know," Finan pressed. "It's not like Keefe would flat-out tell you what the Black Swan is planning!"
"If you wanted him to do that, you should have been nicer." I added.
Gisela glared at me. "Honestly, Gethen. You'd think I haven't planned to get him on my side. In fact, I have a very large agenda. And Fintan, I rigged his Imparter. Had our best Technopath do it. I could eavesdrop on all his conversations. And it has been very enlightening." She winked.
Fintan sighed. "If you think I give a Noxflare about your son's personal life then you are sorely mistaken."
Gisela rolled her eyes. "Back to my announcement. If we use atmospheric stabilizers like Gethen recommended, then we can turn their ambush against us into an ambush against them."
"Gisela's right," I volunteered.
"Thank you, Gethen. At least someone sees wisdom. Now who else is with me?" Glimmer, Trix, Umber, Brant, Alvar, and Ruy all raised their hands. Fintan glowered, then reluctantly raised their hands. "Excellent!" Gisela clapped her hands. "What's the next order of business?"
"Lumenaria's downfall!" I piped in. "What is our plan for that?"
"We have multiple options," Ruy noted. "Outward channeling could work."
"So could Shadowflux," Umber pointed out.
"So could wind," Trix argued.
"So could swallowing it in flames," Fintan added.
"Lumenite doesn't burn," Glimmer reminded him.
Fintan scowled.
Gisela smiled.
"I vote for outward channeling," I informed them.
"You realize that means you'll be stuck in a prison until the Summit occurs, right?" Glimmer reminded him.
"That's part of the game," I told her.
"You and your games," Fintan grumbled.
"My games always win. However, I need help. Even though my mental reserves are unimaginably strong, it may not be enough to topple Lumenaria. And use telekinesis to shield myself."
"You could take Ruy," Trix offered. "He can build up his mental reserves and he could use his ability to shield you both."
"Maybe Trix should go," Ruy retorted.
"I want to go to Summit." Fintan cut in. "So don't even think about locking me up."
"Ruy makes the most sense." Alvar argued.
"No," Ruy insisted. "You need me."
"Ruy makes a good point," Brant agreed. "I think it should be Alvar. He is talented at all the skills. Bring me, too. I can help rescue Vespera."
"We should probably sacrifice Gethen first," Glimmer suggested. "That way we don't seem too suspicious. And he can spend more time building up his mental reserves."
I laughed nervously. "Sacrifice?"
"You'd be perfectly safe." Gisela assured me. I wasn't convinced.
But, bring on the games.
I smiled. "I'll be ready tomorrow."
