Gethen's POV
"My dad found her," Alvar said.
"Her?" I inquired. How was I supposed to know who her was?
"The Moonlark," Alvar informed me. Ohhh. Darn. We needed to get her on our side.
"Before us?" Fintan complained.
Alvar nodded. "We need to find another way to get her on our side. Any ideas?"
"Wait!" Gisela shouted. "My son goes to Foxfire."
"Irrelevant." Fintan rolled his eyes. But I cocked my head. What could Gisela be planning?
"Relevant," Gisela insisted. "If she becomes friends with my son, we can do what we did with Fitz Vacker."
"Well, last I checked, the younger Vacker was not on our side."
"Yet," Gisela said. "I'm still working on it."
"As am I," Alvar agreed.
"Oh! Oh!" Brant cut in." "We can plan a kidnapping,"
"True. The girl is still in the Forbidden Cities." Alvar told us.
"I got it!" Brant said. "We will grab the Moonlark off the dangerous, human-filled streets. I hear that happens all the time there. We can bring her to our hideout and read her mind. I'm sure Gethen would be more than willing. We can find everything the Black Swan is planning! Then, we can wipe her memory, and we can make the Black Swan's creation work in our favor."
"Perfect!" Umber shouted. "Let's get on with that!"
Gisela rolled her eyes. "I still think my idea is much more elegant. Patience is something you must learn, Brant. It will take so much more than your uninspired plan."
"Say that again once my plan is through." Brant rolled his eyes right back at her. I sighed. This game needed to stop.
"You mean once you've learned that it takes more planning and strategizing to win," Gisela replied. "But, I see I'm overruled. Go on with your little plan. But I won't help when you come crawling back."
"Got it." Fintan didn't look the least bit fazed.
"It's most unfortunate that we can't work together," I told them. "If we work as a team we're most likely to win the game."
"Not with Fintan's ideas," Gisela scoffed. "How blind are you, Fintan? You can't see past your Noxflares."
"And you can't see past your son's legacy," Fintan retorted. Gisela's eyes flashed, but she held her head high and said nothing.
Silence followed. Then Brant clapped his hands.
"Does this mean we're on for my plan?" he asked.
"Yes," Fintan said as Gisela opened her mouth to start another argument.
"Fine." was all she said.
"Until next time." Fintan said before raising a crystal to the light and leaping away. The others soon followed, leaving Gisela and me alone.
"Don't tell me you're going to go along with this plan," she scoffed. But I needed to. So I nodded.
"I need to. But if it fails, your idea will be the next option. I'll make sure of that."
She nodded and left me alone in the hideout, contemplating what game I really was playing.
