PART THIRTY FOUR

The light that blinded the group ceased as everyone ran inside the big building of the CDC.

"Daryl cover the back," Shane ordered as he nodded his head.

"Hello? Hello?" Rick said.

"Anybody in here?" Hailey called out beside Glenn.

"Watch those doors and watch those walkers," Dale announces.

"Hello?" Rick asked again.

The group enters and looks around at the lobby. It's completely empty.

"Hello?" Rick asks for the last time just as a gun clicked.

A man holding a gun was up the stairs as Hailey moved away from Glenn and back to Rick's side.

"Anybody infected?" He asked causing Hailey to shake her head.

"One of us was but he..... He didn't make it," Hailey said before looking down in sadness.

The man sighed.

"Why are you here? What do you want?"

"A chance..... A chance to be here we got no where else to go," Hailey says in a pleading tone as Jenner sighed again.

"What's your name?"

"Hailey..... Hailey Baxter,"

"Baxter? As in John and Marissa Baxter?" He asked wide eyes causing hers to widen as well.

"You..... You knew my parents?"

"We went to high school together, I'm a friend of John's, I am so sorry I know you lost them, you lost your family due to that drunk driver car crash, it wasn't fair for them, I'm Edwin Jenner,"

A gasp leave Hailey's lips causing her to smile as she ran up to him and hugged him causing him to pick her up and spin her around. Both Glenn and Rick looked at each other confused.

"I'm so glad your alive! How did I not remember you before?"

"It's been a long time since I last saw you squirt, your all grown up now,"

"I'm sorry I'm confused," Glenn spoke up raising his hand. "How do you know her?"

"I was a friend of John and Marissa Baxter, her parents," he responds as Hailey grins at him.

"I've been in Hailey's life for as long as I remember why haven't I ever seen you before?" Rick asked suspicious as Hailey rolled her eyes.

"Because I've been here at the CDC I was there with Hailey up until about she was 4, but I've always kept in contact with John up until the last day he was alive,"

"So what do you say Uncle Jenner can we stay?"

He smiled at the nickname she used to give him when she was a child.

"Course but You all submit to a blood test. That's the price of admission,"

"We can do that," Rick agrees with a nod of his head.

"You got stuff to bring in, you do it now. Once this door closes it stays closed," the group begins to run out leaving just Hailey and Jenner behind she knows Rick will get their stuff together.

"So, who's the sheriff?" He started with a raised eyebrow.

"Rick Grimes my boyfriend,"

"Yeah I don't approve,"

"What? You just met him!"

"I saw him push you down..... Who's the Asian?"

"My ex Glenn,"

"I prefer him, he really cares I saw him go up to you the minute Rick pushed you down,"

"Uncle Jenner I'm sure it was an accident Rick was scared and didn't know what he was doing, he's a nice man I promise,"

Just as those words left her lips the group came back inside carrying all the bags, Hailey noticed how Rick was carrying both hers and his and rush to help him.

"I got it," she said taking the bags from him.

"Hailey can we talk?"

"Now?" She asked as the group followed Jenner to the elevator.

"VI, seal the main entrance. Kill the power up here," Jenner said as Rick sighed.

"When we get in the room,"

"So, your Rick Grimes are you not?" Jenner asked raised eyebrow.

"Uncle Jenner come on,"

"Hailey's Boyfriend?"

"Yes.... Why?"

"Well you have yet to apologize to her and I'm just wondering when you plan to,"

"Oh.... You saw?"

"Course I did Rick, and right now I don't like you, I prefer the Asian with her," he said causing Glenn in the back to blush.

"Ummm.... We kinda had our time together,"

"I know but I see the way you care for her,"

"So to ease the awkward Tension Doctors always go around packing heat like that?" Daryl asked to break the attention away from Hailey.

"There were plenty left lying around. I familiarized myself. But you look harmless enough. Except you, I'll have to keep my eye on you and you too Hailey," Jenner said to both Hailey and Carl chuckling.

Hailey laughed.

"Yeah sure Uncle Jenner,"

Out of the elevator Jenner leads the group down the hallways.

"Are we underground?" Carol softly asks.

"Are you claustrophobic?"

"A little," she responds fanning herself.

"Try not to think about it," he said with a small smile to the older woman.
