Prologue

Mystic Falls. It's a home to vampires, werewolves, witches, doppelgängers, mermaids, heretics, and even hybrids. It's also my home. My name is Evelyn Salvatore and I'm seventeen years old. My mom, Elena, is a vampire and a doppelgänger. She's died probably over 10 times. My dad, Damon, is just a vampire. He's been alive for over 150 years. And me? I'm a human. After my parents got married, the Gemini coven put a spell on Mystic Falls. The spell is that from then on, every child born in Mystic Falls will become the supernatural creature or creatures that their parents are. I'm the only human who's ever been born in Mystic Falls since the spell was casted... ever. Everyone who has been born here has been born what there parents are. My cousin Juliet is a vampire. My Aunt Caroline and my Uncle Stefan (her parents) are both vampires. My uncle Stefan is also a doppelgänger, but there hasn't been a living doppelgänger in any of our bloodlines for over twenty years. Everyone considers me weird because I'm a human, but my Mom and Dad just think of me as special.

All my life I've been around supernatural creatures. I walk past them on the street, I walk past them at school, hell, I live with two of them! Sometimes I hear my parents whispering things, when they think I'm not around. They're always talking about this legend thing and about destiny and stuff. But I never really understood what it meant.

Sometimes I consider what my life would be like if everyone knew was human. My friend, Cassandra, who is a heretic always thought that I should treasure being a human... but that all changes.
