My birthday. She was smiling at me.
Rachel scrolled through her phone, her heart aching with each swipe.
The day we went to the park... the ice cream stand... I had pistachio, she had strawberry.
Another scroll.
When we saw that horror flick uptown... Gar came along and had nightmares for days.
With each image, the weight of loss pressed down harder on her. She couldn't stop scrolling, even as the memories felt like daggers.
The past few days had been unkind. She shut herself in her room, emerging only when someone from the team checked in on her or when hunger pulled her from her self-imposed isolation. Gar had tried to coax her out for video games or movies like they used to, but she pushed him away. He considered seeking Dick's advice but thought better of it; it wasn't the right time to burden him.
Rachel continued to flick through her photo gallery, pausing on a picture of Zoya smiling at the camera. The sight made her heart lurch, and she flopped back onto her bed, staring at the cold ceiling above.
Suddenly, thunder rumbled outside, drawing her attention to the window. Rain began to fall, and she rose from her bed, an urge to chant bubbling up from within her.

Rachel waited outside as Dick handles with the check-out. She thought of the visions that plagued her tonight.
But mostly, her thoughts lingered on her mother. This power inside her—the reason her mother was gone.
Maybe I should've died with her... everything would've been easier.
"How are you holding up?"
Rachel looked up to see Zoya approaching, leaning against Dick's car beside her, shoulder to shoulder.
"Fine... I guess," she replied, casting her gaze back to the moon. A heavy silence fell between them until she sighed deeply. "I don't know what I'm doing."
