chp. 2Lost in her thoughts, Chaeryeong hummed a certain tune, something that she didn't remember. She stood by the living room windows that looked down at the city, and her eyesight was good enough to see the cars zooming on the highway. Then, the unexpected sound of the doorbell had jolted her back to reality. She jumped, startled by the unexpected noise, and she also heard a quiet snicker.
Chaeryeong turned around and eyed the brunette that was already getting up from the couch, no trace of any smile on her face. Was she hearing things?
Setting it aside, she followed the brunette slowly, curious to see who had rung the doorbell without notice. Yuna didn't inform her of anyone coming over, or maybe she didn't want to?
Oh, it's just the pizza man.
She chuckled at her previous thoughts and followed the other's movements, closing the door after taking the pizza boxes. Yuna never informed her that they were going to have pizza for dinner.
"We're having pizza for dinner?" She asked, her gaze still following the woman's figure as Yuna passed by her.
The brunette only hummed in response, walking quickly to what Chaeryeong assumed to be the dining room.
As they sat down in their seats, right across from each other, they began to eat in silence. It was bothering Chaeryeong even if it was normal for silences to occur, especially when she was in someone else's house for the first day they had met.
Wanting to break the deafening silence, she finally spoke up. "Did my parents tell your parents about the upcoming family reunion I'm having?" She asked the brunette, looking straight at her as the other ate.
Yuna continued to eat without looking up from her plate. "Yes."
Chaeryeong's eyebrows furrowed in disappointment. "Is that all you have to say?"
Yuna finally looked up at her, her gaze cold and distant. "What else do you want me to say?"
Chaeryeong felt her heart drop at the coldness in Yuna's voice and her distant gaze. She realized that this marriage might be harder than she thought.
Chaeryeong sighed, feeling more and more discouraged by Yuna's unresponsive behavior. It was like talking to a wall, and the silence between them only grew thicker.
"I know it's an arranged marriage and we may not have feelings for each other, but we could at least try to be civil and get to know each other, right?" Chaeryeong said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Yuna looked up from her plate, her eyes meeting Chaeryeong's for a brief moment before she looked away again. "I don't see the point in trying to get to know someone I'll never love or care for," she replied coldly.
Chaeryeong felt a pang in her chest at Yuna's words. She knew that an arranged marriage didn't guarantee love, but she had hoped that they could at least become friends. It seemed like that was too much to ask for.
"I understand that we may not have a romantic relationship, but I still think it's important to have a good relationship as partners," Chaeryeong said, trying to keep her voice calm and level.
Yuna just shrugged and took another bite of her pizza, not bothering to reply. Chaeryeong could feel her frustration mounting, but she knew that getting angry wouldn't solve anything.
