Nya screamed and dropped to the floor, breaking down in total shock and fear.
Her brother was gone. Again.
Tears welled in Lloyd's eyes as he stared at the abandoned room, horror set into his mind as well.
Oh my god, had Kai been taken?
"WHAT HAPPENED!?" Jay skidded out from the living room and ran down the hallway, basically tripping on the floor and landing beside Nya, trying to figure out what was wrong. Cole followed close behind Jay, out of breath as his chest had tightened with the piercing sound of Nya's scream.
Jay followed Lloyd's eyes and so did Cole when he looked round the door to Kai's room.
"Is everything ok!? We heard screaming!" Wu ran up to them with Pixal and Zane.
Nya was crying into Jay's shoulder and Lloyd was leaning on the door frame clutching his chest. Cole and Jay exchanged concerned looks.
Wu, Pixal, and Zane analyzed Kai's room and tension grew over them.
"Where... where is he?" Cole asked the obvious question.
"He-- What if-- He could've been-- Taken--" Nya hiccoughed into more sobs and Jay turned all of his attention to comforting Nya. Zane looked over at Lloyd and glanced at Pixal who shook her head with worry in response.
Zane walked up to Lloyd and placed his hand on his shoulder. Lloyd jumped back, breathing heavily."Hey, Lloyd, it's ok, he'll be ok," Zane reached out his arms, offering Lloyd a hug.
Lloyd looked longingly at Zane's open arms, he just wanted some comfort, some confirmation from Kai that he was going to be ok.
Wu took a deep breath.
"Let's not panic ourselves more than we need to, Kai could have very well just gone to get fresh air--"
"NO SENSEI! We didn't panic last time he 'went to get fresh air' and you know where he ended up!" Nya snapped, quickly standing up, anger growing inside of her.
"Nya... calm down, let's not fight right now..." Jay carefully tried, taking hold of Nya's hand. Nya's anger wasn't stronger than the dread still building up in her and she looked down in shame.
Lloyd turned away from everyone again, looking out of Kai's window. He had seen Kai's room last. He tried to think about how it had looked like when he came in here all those hours ago, but his mind was so fuzzy, he could feel a growing headache.
Despite Lloyd not having accepted Zane's hug, Zane came over to him and wrapped his arm around Lloyd's shoulders anyway, and Lloyd didn't fight him. It reminded him of Kai, and even if he knew it wasn't him, it made him feel a little better.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"C'mon guys, let's think about this logically."
Kai paced in the hallway, hugging himself, trying to return his breathing to normal. This was the second time he'd asked for a break. He felt pathetic.
"Here you go, Kai," John walked up to Kai with a glass of water. Kai hesitated. The more time he spent here, the harder it was to block out the reoccurring similarities between his torture, and this interrogation.
When Kai didn't take the water, John placed it down on the set of drawers outside the room. Kai looked to the ground.
"Listen, you're doing great, especially for having gone through so much, you being here and giving your statement the day after the fact is not something we see often," John tried to reassure Kai, but he was beyond any comfort. "Speaking of, victims of such... horrific acts, are usually accompanied by someone. Would... would you like to call someone up?" He suggested, trying to catch Kai's eyes. Kai could tell, but he took the glass of water and turned away to continue pacing.
"No. I'll be fine. I just need another minute. I'm almost done with it anyway..." Kai trailed off, thinking about how much he still had left to write.
Maybe it would be easier to say some of it out loud? But without someone who would actually care to properly listen, Kai didn't see much point in talking. And he was NOT going to call anyone. He could do this alone. He would finish this alone.
"Ok, we'll be waiting back in the room," John tapped Kai's shoulder and walked off.
It had been an hour since he left the monastery, longer than Kai wanted to be gone for. He hoped that the others hadn't checked in on him in his room yet, he could imagine they'd be worried if they found it in the messy state he'd left it. That'd also be slightly embarrassing.
Kai's mind wandered so far as that it even reached the idea of asking to continue the interrogation later, but Kai dismissed the idea quickly.
He gulped the glass down and went back into the room.
When he stepped in, the officers were reading what he had written so far. He awkwardly hesitated, for a split second he had the urge to turn around, run out, and never look back. But he strode on in, repressing all of his emotion and thought.
Kai sat down back in his chair, and waited for the officers to finish. He started counting the ticks of the clock as to distract himself, before he heard a deep sigh come from one of the officers. Kai looked away from the clock as the officers looked up from the paper. Matt cleared his throat.
"Kai, this has plenty of very important information for us, we appreciate the detail too, it will definitely help your case in court as well," Kai's heart skipped a beat.
Court...?
Kai shook his head in disbelief of what he just heard.
"Mhm, thank you, Kai, you're doing a great job, but we do have some questions on--"
"I-- I'm sorry, did-- did you just say 'court'?" Kai interrupted with a strained voice. The officers looked between each other. Matt nodded slowly and Kai caught his breath.
"Yes, I did say court... But-- don't-- don't panic! By 'helping your case in court' I mean it will easily help us prove Mark of more tortures than what he's admitted to so far, it'll get him more years in jail," Matt tried to explain but Kai was light-headed. He felt like he was about to throw up his guts at the mention of him.
And not only him, Kai just found out that he was going to have only years in prison.
Not a life sentence, not a death sentence, just a couple of years.
Kai's vision went blurry and everything began to spin. He heard one of the officers say something but it sounded so distant. He shakily stood up, leaning against the table.
"I... I'm sorry... I... I don't think I can..." Kai tried to murmur as he stumbled towards the door, but instead he hurled towards the floor. He heard the officers shout and stand up from their chairs, and then everything went black.
