DSF: "Daddy Issues"

Chapter 13:

Dre's P.O.V.

"So I've been wanting to ask you something for quite some time," I said as we took our water break. When he had time, Jay would often train with me in fencing. I figure now was a better time than any. Whatever Chad dug up on Hope wouldn't give me any insight on her like those close to her. Jay didn't say anything and instead just watched me with a curious look. "It's about the future Queen's sister." Immediately, his relaxed posture tensed. He looked away quickly taking a drink from his water bottle. "I know Mal is desperately searching for her and the other VK. How much danger is Auradon in with those two running free?"

"When it comes to Uma, I can tell you it probably won't be anything good," Jay said. He looked to the ground as he thought for a moment. "And with Lia? I honestly don't think she means any harm."

"How can you be so sure? " I asked. He shrugged.

"Lia's always been different," he said looking at his bottle, "in a place where power was everything, she used hers to protect those that didn't have any. I can't even tell you the number of times she took the fall for things we did to shield us from our parents." I thought about what he said and I remembered how we first met. A person with only malice in their hearts would never have cared about the wails of an infant. But it's not like she came to Auradon just to save wailing infants. She must have some ulterior motive?

"And was that the same Lia you encountered on the boat?" I asked. Jay frowned shaking his head as he thought back to that memory.

"Lia loved Mal," he said, "I couldn't believe she had went along with Uma especially when it meant hurting Mal."

"So, then this new Lia could be bad?"

"Only if she's around Uma," Jay said shaking his head at my question."but I doubt it. Uma would not be waiting this long with Lia's power at her side. She's always been the impatient type." I nodded my head in thought. Well, it does help that I haven't seen that octopus VK around.

Maybe, she deserved the benefit of the doubt?

"Should we go back to training?" Jay asked. I nodded my head. Our training didn't last long after Chad came to get me. I asked him to look into Hope's history for me.

"You know she might find you a bit obsessive if she finds out your doing a background check on her," Chad said as I looked over the investigator's report. "In fact, she might get creeped out and break up...with you." I turned to look at Chad. I honestly wasn't paying as much attention as I should have to my future King.

"Sorry, what did you say?" I asked turning from the papers to look at him.

"Me? Nuh... Nothing," he said turning away seeming to focus on his own thoughts, "nothing at all."

I focused back on my research. According to the report, Hope was an orphan from Mountain Heart Orphanage, which coincidentally burnt down. A bad feeling filled me. Hope along with the rest of the children were never recovered. At least, until recently. The Freunds seem to be in the middle of the adoption process with each child as they've also went through the process to become foster parents. All of the children were going to school in Auradon. What are the odds that VK happened to run into a burned down orphanage and found the perfect cover with all those children? And why are those kids letting her get away with it? Are they under a spell? She's done it to Audrey. Are they being threatened and held hostage against their will? Just because she will help a child in danger, doesn't mean she won't manipulate and use them for her own gain... Maybe, she burned the place down because she needed the cover. She was being hunted. She could have been desperate. Am I doing it again? Jumping to conclusions? Will this bite me in the butt if I go accusing her again? But I mean, she's a villain. How am I not supposed to expect the worst? She's wanted for a reason!...but her actions have shown that she deserves the benefit of the doubt. Fine...no better time than now to get these thoughts out of my head.
