DSF: "Daddy Issues"

Chapter 3: Discovered

In the mornings, I'd take a swim and connect with Uma using the water no matter how deep in the sea she was. It was amazing the distance our thoughts could travel to each other. I offered her a place with us and the kids and even though she agreed that she'd probably take up my offer some day, she wanted to venture out and explore the seven seas now that she was free. I didn't blame her. That's how I felt first stepping into Auradon.

I got out of the water climbing onto the end of the dock. I don't know what it was lately, but something felt really wrong with me lately. I've been getting migraines and I've been feeling weak. Worst thing was not knowing what was causing me to feel this way, but no matter how much I tried to spell the symptoms away it only seemed to make things worse.

As I was catching my balance on the edge of the pier, I sneezed and ended up losing it. I cried out as I began to fall back when a hand reached out and clasped my arm. I looked up and saw Ethan standing at the pier.

"Whoa there," he smiled, "You alright?"

"Yeah," I replied pulling my arm away from him after I was secure on the dock.

"Hope, right?" He said as he wiped his hands on his jeans. I guess he probably still had that water curse on him.

"Yeah," I replied as I stood up, "anyway, sorry, but I'm already running late. It was nice seeing you again."

Without another word, I grabbed my things and I ran off the dock and off the beach toward the Dessert Shop. I made it there with not even a minute to spare.

"Made it!" I shouted as I bursted right through the door.

"You're late," I heard Mr. Fruend argue. "Early is on time and On time is-"

"Late, I know I know," I grumbled. "You know if I'm going to be faulted for not being early, then I should get paid extra when I do arrive early." Mrs. Fruend laughed at the look Mr. Fruend made. She went around the counter coming toward me as Mr. Fruend grumbled something under his breath.

"She's got you there, honey," Mrs. Fruend smiled as she came over with the towel for my hair. "How many times do I have to tell you about your early morning swims in this cold weather?" She placed the towel over my head. I didn't know why. It's not like I didn't know how to take care of myself, but...I couldn't help it. There was something about her helping me dry my hair that made me feel strange...in a pleasant way.

As the day went by, I began feeling weaker and weaker. First, my head began to pound. Then, it began getting too hot. I tried not to draw attention, but Mrs. Fruend seemed to catch on. I told her I was fine as I continued stacking up dishes in the bin to clear tables and although, she didn't believe me, she let it slide for now.

The sudden screeching cry startled me making me drop the bin of dishes on the table as it caused for the pounding to get stronger. It took all the control in me to keep my hair from lighting up in its fiery blue blaze. I turned to look at the child who was crying as her parent tried to calm her. Her ice cream seemed to have fallen right off the cone. I let out a sigh as I walked over grabbing a piece of napkin from the table. I kneeled down in front of her. Having someone new focused on her seemed to calm her screams despite that tears were still rolling down her face.

"You know what situations like this need?" I asked as I placed the napkin over the empty cone still gripped in her hand. She shook her head. "A little bit of faith, a lot of trust-"

"And pixie dust!" The little brown haired girl interrupted excited.

"Not exactly," I laughed. "You don't want pixie dust in your ice cream. It tastes yucky. Let's try something else."
