"What do you mean I have a child". Lena looked at Asher in disbelief, "Of course i have a child, it was not a secret to begin with."
"Oh." He became speechless, unsure of what to say next that will not upset Lena.
"Its okay, most people get the same face, i am used to it." Lena shrugged, helping Kevin up, who handed her his newest sketch.
"No no no, dont get the wrong idea, i am just surprised, i cant say its a good surprise, but its definately a surprise." Asher said again.
Before Lena could respond, she heard her name being called. Her attention required inside.
"Come on Kevin, lets go." she told the boy, but Asher had other idea.
"No, you go ahead, Kevin and i are going to sit here and have some fun." Asher smiled suggestively, looking at the young boy.
"Yes, Mummy, its fine, you can go on." Lena contemplated for a second, before leaving the two boys outside, under the shade of a tree, where they were safe from he harshness of the hot summer sun.
"Who is that?" Ria asked Lena the moment she stepped in.
"Oh, that is Asher, who i believe you have a date with next week." Lena replied.
Ria's eyes almost bulged from their socket, "That is him? Damn! He is fine." She said in her best 'nigga' impression.
Lena simply rolled her eyes at her and proceeded with her work.
"And how do you happen to know him?" Ria asked, following Lena around the store like a lost puppy.
"He is my friend." Lena replied, keeping a tight lip on the details.
"Come on tell me, if your friend is going on a date with me, you should at least tell me what his deal is." Ria urged
"I dont know what his deal is, Ria, get back to work now." Lena said, starting to get frustrated about Ria's questions.
Asher and Kevin decided on playing a mind game, it was Asher's idea to test the kid's brain, he was even more surprised when he didn't back down.
"Its not what it looked like." Asher told Kevin as they sat back under the shade of the tree.
"But you and Mummy got a baby together." Kevin stated the obvious, he was much smarter than anyone gave him credit for.
"Yes, we did, but i have never met that kid. Its her mothers child. Its hard to explain to a kid, and to be honest, i am not good with words. But Kevin, you are my best friend and i would never do anything to hurt you, so please believe me." Asher pleaded, he had seen kids give up all their time for their parents and he did not want his life to be like that.
"Grown-ups are good at lying Asher." Kevin said matter of factly.
"Yes, they are, but i know you are not going to believe me unless i prove myself." Asher said.
"This is getting boring, let's play another game." Kevin suddenly suggested, leaving Asher to think on a suitable game to play with a kid of six years old.
"Ria what are you looking at?" Lena finally asked, after catching her looking out the tall glass window
"I am just looking, nothing much." Ria said, with a tone that suggested she was hiding something.
"If you say so." Lena replied, taking Ria's hand and leading her to the store door.
"I am just going to check outside, see if Kevin is having fun."
"I'll go with you!" Ria shouted.
"Okayyyyyy..."
Smiling, Lena could not help but appreciate the fact that Asher didn't take her having a child weird.
The smile on her face would put the sun to shame. Ria felt that and left the scene, back to her work.
"Kevin! It's time to leave." She called out.
"Come on, Mummy is calling." Asher helped him up and pulled the boy in the direction of his mother.
"Thanks Asher. You never did say what bring you here." Lena said with a frown.
"I just dropped by to say hi."
"Oh, okay, see you around then." Lena waved and started to walk away, but a tug at her hand stopped her.
Kevin pulled his hand from his mother and ran back to his new friend, Asher. He pulled his arms out, wanting a hug.
"Thank you Asher, for being Mummy's friend." Kevin whispered into his ear.
"You're welcome, Kev." Asher hugged him back.
"Kev. I like it."
"Come on sweetie." Lena waved once again and left, leaving Asher to rattle his brain, thinking on why he felt drawn to her.
"There is something about you." He muttered to himself, knowing and confirming a new book title has been birthed by his day.
