Asher sighed, feeling defeated. "I understand that it's going to take time, Lena. But please, just give me a chance to make it right."
"I don't know if I can," Lena said softly. "You hurt me so much with that simple word, Asher. I don't think I can forgive you."
"I know, Lena. And I'm sorry. I wish I could take it all back, but I can't. All I can do is try to make things right and show you that I am truly sorry."
Lena was silent for a moment, considering Asher's words. "I need time to think," she finally said. "I can't make any promises right now."
"I understand," Asher said. "Just know that I am here for you, whenever you're ready to talk."
They said their goodbyes, and Asher hung up the phone feeling both relieved and anxious. He knew that winning Lena's forgiveness was going to be a long and difficult process, but he was willing to do whatever it took.
Over the next few weeks, Asher tried to reach out to Lena several times, but she was distant and unresponsive. He respected her need for space but couldn't help feeling frustrated and helpless.
He remembered how they got to that extent:
A while after Asher sent the letter to Lena at the store she worked at, he was really anxious when he didn't get a response, so he visited her at the grocery store she worked at.
As Asher walked into the grocery store, he scanned the aisles for Lena. He spotted her at the checkout counter, scanning items for a middle-aged couple. Asher's heart raced as he walked towards her. He could feel beads of sweat forming on his forehead, and he hoped that Lena couldn't see the nervousness on his face.
When he reached the front of the line, Lena looked up and gasped when she saw him. "You!? What are you doing here?" she asked, her eyes wide narrowing at him.
"I-I just wanted to see you," he stammered, his voice shaking slightly.
Lena rolled her eyes and continued scanning the couple's groceries. "Well, I'm working," she said dismissively.
Asher watched her, feeling foolish and rejected. He knew he shouldn't have come, but he couldn't help himself. He had to see her, to know if she had received his letter and if she would forgive him.
As Lena finished scanning the couple's items, Asher gathered his courage. "Lena, please. Can we talk? Just for a few minutes?"
"How do you know my name? Nevermind." She remembered how she registered the dating thingy with her full name.
Lena sighed and motioned for him to follow her to the break room in the back of the store. As they walked, Asher could feel his heart pounding in his chest. The tension between them was palpable, and he didn't know what to expect.
When they reached the break room, Lena sat down at the small table in the corner, and Asher nervously took a seat across from her. For a moment, they sat in silence, each of them in thoughts.
Asher really wanted her to forgive him, but she was not acting a bit like she was ready to.
"Lena, I know I messed up," he began, his voice low and remorseful. "But please, hear me out. I know I hurt you, and I'm so sorry."
Lena looked up at him, her eyes cold and distant. "You're damn right you messed up," she said icily.
Asher hung his head, feeling disappointed with himself. He knew Lena was right. He had screwed up big time, and he had hurt her in the process. "I'm sorry, Lena," he whispered. "I never meant to hurt you. I was going through a rough patch, and I didn't know how to deal with it. I shouldn't have taken it out on you. I was a coward, and I'm sorry."
"Is that all you wanted to say." Lena stood up abruptly. "My break is over, can you leave?"
"Um, I'll come back later after your shift then." He said, standing up.
"Don't bother." She stated icily.
Asher felt his heart sink as Lena walked out of the break room, leaving him alone with his thoughts. He knew he had messed up big time, and he didn't know how to fix it. He thought about leaving the store and never coming back, but something inside of him wouldn't let him give up so easily.
He decided to wait outside the store and try to talk to Lena when she was finished with her shift. He waited for what felt like hours, watching customers come and go, but Lena didn't emerge from the store.
Just as he was about to give up and go home, Lena finally walked out of the store, her face expressionless. Asher took a deep breath and stepped forward to talk to her, but she held up a hand to stop him.
"Listen, Asher," she said firmly. "I appreciate that you came to apologize, but I can't just forgive you like that. You hurt me, and I need time to heal."
"Oh, I'm sorry." With that he left with a vow to do everything he could to make her forgive him.
He made sure to go to the grocery store everyday, just to see her and apologize, in the end she had no choice but to give him her phone number, just so he doesn't keep coming to her place of work.
"Don't come here again." She said handing him back his phone.
"What if I want to get groceries?" He asked teasingly.
"You know what I mean." She rolled her eyes and went back to work.
"I won't disturb, I promise!" He called after her, feeling a bit accomplished.
Maybe, just maybe he stood a chance at getting forgiven by the one woman who seems to pique his interest.
He was pulled out of his thoughts as his phone rang.
It was Lena.
