Sadie Wagner- Norwegian (mother); German/Irish (father); Sadie Wagner is an outgoing and popular female student whom Eli Fonseca befriended and developed unrequited feelings for throughout his late childhood. She is a type 1 diabetic and was well-received by many of her classmates for her physical beauty, as well as her assured, positive personality and open-minded demeanor. An only child, she was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona and raised by a mother who worked as a software developer and father who was an accountant. Her greatest passion in life was playing soccer, as she aspired to one day play in the women's team in Stanford University, and she also shared Eli's fascination with Star Wars, most notably the Mandalorian. Sadie tended to be a kind and fair individual whom gave others the benefit of the doubt, and she refused to compromise her morals or her beliefs for the sake of popularity. She was inclined to protect the underdogs and took Eli under her wing after a series of misunderstandings that culminated in him getting a pie in his face. As the new girl in Eli's hometown of Sparks, her vibrant hair color and love for all things sci-Fi and fantasy related quickly made her the center of attention among many of the boys. This would result in his growing increasingly frustrated, if territorial in claiming Sadie as his girlfriend and going to the extent of trying to invest in Disney Plus to impress her. While Sadie was usually patient and understanding, she was not a person to mince words, as she briskly clarified her boundaries to Eli and her other suitors. She showed concern for a deflated Eli however and proceed to show sympathy for his struggles during a heartfelt conversation at the playground, which would lead to the start of their friendship.
Having been bullied and ostracized by his classmates for much of his life for speaking with a mild stutter and sharing Sadie's diabetic condition, Eli's popularity immediately increased by his association with her, leading him to form new unexpected friendships. The two would eventually come to regard each other as their best friend however and routinely devote their weekends to having sleepovers at each other's houses as they binge-watched their favorite shows together. A shy and timid boy, Eli became enamored with Sadie and likened her to Jean Grey, his favorite comic book heroine, and would spend hours crafting poems detailing his affection for her. He would keep his feelings secreted however and aimed to keep his crush on her subtle, feeling wary of a romance between them possibly affecting their friendship. His love for Sadie became most pronounced when she defended him during an infamous dodgeball incident that took place in gym class one day and resulted in his having a broken arm. Even so, he was mocked and dismissed by his male classmates when he referred to her as his baby girl, as they claimed that "two diabetics simply couldn't have a baby together". Sadie was very self-sufficient and goal-oriented from a young age, and she admitted she wasn't the type of person who liked "frilly details or unnecessary fluff". She was shown to be very feminine in appearance however and among the most stylish of her female classmates, some of whom expressed slight jealousy towards her. She was known to make friends very easily and was a good communicator who could interact with people from all walks of life, even winning the support of the cafeteria chef. Her most defining characteristic nonetheless was her confidence, as she carried herself with pride wherever she went and had a strong presence that couldn't easily be avoided. Sadie and Eli grew closer to each other as friends as his parents began to suffer marriage problems, causing him to constantly fear that they would get a divorce.
He confided his deepest worries and fears in her, most notably his insecurities regarding the absenteeism of his father and how his actions impacted him. At the spur of the moment, he impulsively looked into Sadie's eyes and confessed that he loved her, holding her hand before he leaned in to kiss her. She was taken aback and quickly brought his behavior to a halt, questioning him on what he was doing and admitting that while she was flattered, she only saw him as a brother. Although Eli was hurt and dejected by her rejection, his deep infatuation with the pretty strawberry blonde persisted, so much as he sometimes stared at her from afar in the music classroom simply to get a glance at her. His possessive attitude when she spoke to other boys caused some friction in their relationship, although he proved time again to be a loyal friend to her. He asked his good friend Trey how to find a way to woo her in his direction, after which he instantly suggested ChatGTP, a writing app that would impress her with the most eloquently written paragraphs. Despite her denying his advances, her remained her biggest supporter during her soccer games and gave her a silver-link bracelet with green stones for good luck. While Sadie was a good-natured person at heart, she was relatively naive to the struggles of the mostly working-class kids in her community and couldn't quite empathize with the hardships Eli had with his family. Unlike Eli, she had been raised by loving, supportive middle-class parents whom took the time to express their fondness for her and had a special relationship with her mother. Her father had decided to move her family to Sparks, Nevada shortly after she was diagnosed with diabetes following a bullying incident that took place at her old school. Although she was accustomed to the city life and had the privilege of being exposed to the luxuries of Scottsdale, he believed that a change of scenery, and perhaps the cleaner air of a less urban setting would benefit her health the most.
Sadie belonged to an extended group of female friends with whom she ate lunch with, but still tried to make time for Eli and would sometimes sit by him at swings in the playground. He asked her one day what her favorite food that he couldn't eat was, admitting that his was waffle fries, although she remained pensive for a moment and replied that she hadn't rely thought of it. She enthusiastically told him stories about her first experience horseback riding when she volunteered at Camp Overlook, which fostered underprivileged kids between the ages of 6-17, and how she had always wanted a pony. She developed a more somber expression however when she told him how she would be away at soccer camp for the majority of the summer, which would keep them apart. Eli's mother came to have a hard conversation with him in his bedroom while his little sister Nina was sleeping, stating that she and his father simply weren't on the same page anymore and were contemplating a divorce. He asked her if this would mean that he wouldn't be able to attend the same school as Sadie anymore, after which his mother replied that good friends come and go, but that the true ones stick forever. He vowed to write her a letter every day she spent away at soccer camp and anticipating meeting her up in his living room to watch the new season of the Mandalorian as she had promised. Their correspondences lessened in frequency however before she ultimately stopped sending letters altogether, leading him to daydream about her in his bedroom as he counted the tiles in his ceiling. Sadie would finally return to Sparks the first week of August, but upon interacting with her, he sensed that something in the dynamic between them had changed. She seemed a bit less friendly and welcoming, and he noticed that she suddenly radiated an aura of maturity that made him feel slightly intimidated.
He ran in her direction to greet her and was dumbstruck as he tried to find the proper words to say to her, although she brushed past him to greet another boy whom he was unfamiliar with named Jason. As the weeks passed by at school, he noticed that Sadie had become more distant and even reluctant to include him in their usual activities, which she now claimed were "too babyish" for her tastes. The word of Sadie being romantically involved with an older 7th grade boy had spread among his classmates, and when the day of his move across the country to New York came, he left a simple drawing at her doorstep for her to remember him by. She and Eli would ultimately lose touch with one another, although he learns that she has tried out for the twirling team by the time they are in high school. She takes a summer trip throughout the West Coast during which she goes to see the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and Yosemite and has a picnic with her family in a ghost town. She is later sent to a preparatory school for the remainder of her high school years and considers applying to USC on an athletic scholarship. Sadie is a beautiful young girl who has waist-length strawberry blonde hair, green eyes, and fair skin with freckles, and she stands at around average height at 5 ft 4. She has an athletic build and is fond of cyan as a color, and a few of her favorite things include butterscotch pie, chicken fried steak, seashells, glitter and her PlayStation 5. She develops a bit of a mean streak, but humbles down and plants a tree at school while bonding with a dyslexic girl who aspired to become a teacher. She vaguely recalls Eli's face one day however when she attends a meeting in which he has become a motivational speaker to raise diabetes awareness, smiling faintly at him as she smooths down the hair of her infant son.
