Chapter 18: The Trials - Into the Fire

I open my eyes and instantly start wiping tears from my eyes. I cover my eyes trying to get ahold of myself but it's too much. Jesus why does this have to happen me? I've been having the dreams for weeks but this one was ten times worse than all the others. Everyone was dead and it was all my fault. Even Logan and my sick and twisted mind saved him for last. Gods, what was wrong with me? I guess I really am turning into a psychopath. Taking a deep breath I open my eyes and look around me.

Fire! I jump up on my feet and look around me. A perfectly geometrical circle surrounds me completely torching the unfortunate trees that got in the way of its demonic design. Other fire burns bright in surrounding areas too. Sending bright embers and sparks into the air making it hard to see more than a few short feet away. I hear a rustle above me then a loud snap and jump backwards just in time to miss a tree branch twice as big as me crash to the ground right where I'd been standing. Whereever I was it was definitely out to get me.

"This isn't real." I mutter to myself watching the trees fall apart. "It's just a dream none of this can be real." I look down at my hands and stifle a scream. There red. It looked like blood red light was trying to break its way through my skin. To free itself. "No, it's not happening. Someone is just screwing with your head none of this is real. I just need to wake up."

"That's not how it works." A voice whispers behind me. I whip around and come face to face with the god of the underworld himself in full Greek attire. Everything about him is inhuman. From his seven foot height to his face that for once wasn't Logan's.

"What the hell are you doing?" I snap and he laughs. "Get me out of here!" I shout in a panic.

"And why would you want to leave?" He walks to the burning branch waving his hand harmlessly through the fire. He smiles at me and I swear I see fangs. "I don't know...I kind of like it."

"I bet you do. Where am I?"

"Don't you know?"

"Why would I ask you if I knew?" He laughs walking circles around me. Should I take out my swords? Would it do any good? He was a god after all.

"I really thought you were smarter than this. All of the others seemed to realize right away what this place was. I suppose it's not entirely your fault. This place is one of many names and is different for everyone who is unlucky enough to lay eyes on it." He stops directly in front of me. "This is your hell, your prison, and your eternal damn nation. This is your-"

"Trials...this is my trial." I breathe out.

"That a girl, I knew you'd figure it out eventually." I look at the growing forest fire around me then back at Hades.

"Did I do this?"

"No."

"Then why are you here?" I blink and then next time I open my eyes Hades nose is inches from mine.

"You've caused me a great deal of trouble these past two years. This is my pay off. I'm going to watch you suffer throughout the centuries. You may be a monster Mia Barone but you will feel everything. This is the last conversation you will ever have with another being in this life time. Say goodbye." Hades begins to walk away from me, fading with each step he takes.

"You need me!" I shout and Hades pauses.

"Correction, I needed you. I will accomplish my goals weather you live or die."

"Then why keep me alive this whole time? It doesn't make sense!"

"I didn't want to take the chance. It would work with you alive...it might work with you dead. Unfortunately I cannot lay a hand to you. Your little trinket protects you from me. I'll do what I need to before you change and take the necklace for myself."
