Chapter 15: Defy Lost My Prophecy

Everything about Rachel Elizabeth Dare seems normal. From her tattered blue jeans with doodles covering almost every inch to her ‘Save the Amazon” tee shirt. Her room was big, unlike mine. Even though her room was a cave, everything somehow magically ended up fitting into place like it was meant to be. I’d seen Rachel around camp but I didn’t really much about her. I only know the basics. She hosts the Oracle of Defy, meaning she hands out the quests…sort of,  and she lives in a cave. That my friends is all I know about the girl who may or may not know how to save my life. Comforting. “So Mia.”

“Hi…” I trail off and she laughs getting off her bed shoving her head phones carelessly off to the side. She was tall. An inch sorter than me but still tall. Her hair was wavy red and cut off at her shoulders.

“We haven’t really gotten a chance to talk, so” she holds out her hand. “I’m Rachel.”

“Mia Barone.”

“So I’ve been thinking about all of this your whole…predicament. Since I’ve been here I’ve given out tons of quests. Some big and some small but no one’s ever just not gotten one. Maybe they didn’t hear it or I was sleeping or something. But there was always a quest.”

“What are you saying.”

“I don’t know I’m just wondering if there’s something you can tell me. Like are you leaving anything out?” The question caught me so off guard I almost fell over.

“Excuse me?”

“Nothing personal but I just need to know.” I cross my arms over my chest and lean back on my heals.

“No, there’s nothing I left out. I got the necklace. It protects me from three people: Probably Galene, Logan/Akakios, and Cleo.”

“Cleo, The Daughter of Artemis.”

“That’s the one. That and something’s up with all the baddies out there.” She looks from me to Annabeth.

“What is she talking about?” Annabeth steps up.

“I wasn’t sure it was related but when Mia was out there she fought a Basilisk. It was supposed to be a little more than a foot long. The one she fought was roughly three and a half feet.”

“Three and a half feet? Did you fight anything else?”

“A few giant rats then after the quests there were a few Kampe.” Annabeth and Rachel both swear under their breath cursing in Greek but Percy looks just as confused as I do.”

“What?” He asks and they look at us.

“Rats.” Percy and I look at each other.

“Yeah rats, giant, discussing, man eating, flesh loving rats…what about them?”

“There Rats!” I stay silent looking between Rachel and Annabeth waiting for one of them to figure out I have no idea what the hell their talking about. “Rats are considered lucky to the Greeks but mostly to the Romans.”

“Meaning?”

“You shouldn’t have been fighting giant monstrous rats. You shouldn’t even be fighting the normal ones. It’s bad. Rat Monsters don’t exist in any Greek Myth, history or bestiary I’ve ever read.”

“So they were affected just like the basilisk was. Something bad is going on.” Rachel’s eyes widen and she runs to a desk that looks remarkably like mine piled high with scraps of paper. She searches through them desperately looking for something. Sighing she plops in her desk chair and runs a hand through her hair.
