Evidence

I was scared of how the day would unfold. I knew the way I wanted it to. I wanted to waltz in and get the knife and get out, but it wouldn't be that simple. There was always the possibility that these cops knew about vampires and that they used Vervain. They could easily kill my friends. I didn't want that obviously. Each minute we were in the city added to my anxiety.

We had spent the night in my old apartment. I had continued to pay the bills, seeing as I had planned on returning one day. Bonnie and I slept in my bed while Caroline and Tyler shared the couch. I didn't want to be rude, but I really missed my own bed.

We woke up early the next morning. I showered and then everyone else took their turns. I threw my hair up into a messy bun and decided to wear a little makeup since I had plenty of time to get ready. I also thought that if I looked nice, the police would be more willing to help me than if I looked like a hood rat. I wore a pair of skinny jeans, combat boots, and a beige cami.

"You look cute," Bonnie smiled, walking into the living room. She wore a simple pair of blue jean shorts and a t-shirt.

"So do you," I winked jokingly. "I'm nervous. Am I supposed to be so nervous?"

"Well, considering that you might be figuring out who killed your mom, I would say that it's perfectly normal to be nervous. Although, our mission is anything but normal."

"Mission?" Tyler teased, joining the conversation. "What are we - spies?"

"Oh shut up! You knew what I meant!" Bonnie chuckled. I smiled at them as we waited for Caroline. When she finally emerged, we left.

I was shaking by the time we reached the Police Department. I couldn't do this. I have to, but I can't. I glanced at my friends hesitantly. They simply nodded their heads.

"We're right behind you," Caroline promised.

I faked a smile and got out of the car. My stomach was churning as I got out of the car. I swung the door open and approached the woman at the counter. She glanced up at me and smiled.

"Can I help you?"

"Yes, I was just wondering if I could talk to someone about an unsolved case," I answered.

The woman nodded and I told her which case I was interested in. She began to type in things and she pulled up something on her computer and printed it. She handed it over to me.

"Thats all I have on the Kathy Benson case," she told me. I frowned down at the piece of paper.

"Actually," I started. "I was hoping to talk to the detectives who worked on it."

She let out a sigh before pressing a call button. Within a minute, a man in his late thirties appeared before me. The receptionist explained what was going on and the man walked over to me. That's when everyone else came to join me.

"These are my friends," I told him when I saw the confused look on his face. "Don't mind them. They're just here for support."

"Okay," he said hesitantly. "What did you want to know about Kathy Benson?"

"She was my mother," I informed him. "I remember that there was some evidence on the scene - a knife. I was wondering if I could see it."

"I'm afraid I can't do that. That's confidential information that I don't have the authority to release."

"You don't understand. I can solve this case if you could just give it to me!"

"Ma'am, what you're asking of me is highly illegal. I'm going to have to ask you to leave," the detective told me.

Caroline stepped forward and grabbed his shoulders. She forced him to look her dead in the eyes. "Give her the knife and tell no one," she ordered. The man nodded and left to go get it. "Easy."

The guy returned with the weapon. I thanked him and quickly left, ignoring the looks we were getting from the receptionist. When we got back to the car, I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

I was so close. All we had to do was do the locator spell. Then we could track this guy and work out a deal. My phone rang once again, and I instantly knew it was Klaus.

"Did you get what you wanted?" He questioned. I could tell that he was upset that I had went against him.

"I got his knife. Bonnie will help us locate him, and then I can find him," I answered.

"I'm going with you," he sighed. "I'm not letting you put your life in danger without being there to protect you."

"No, not gonna happen," I said as the car came to a stop. "You'll just get in the way." I got out and started towards my apartment. I reached for the door handle, but someone already opened it. Damon and Klaus stood inside.

"I'm afraid that you don't have a choice, love," Klaus smirked.
