STEPHANIE WALKED INTO the Home Economics classroom and took a seat beside Olivia. Olivia raised her eyebrows and smacked the other girl lightly on the shoulder. "Is this Gil's jacket?" She asked.

Cynthia beelined for her sister as soon as she walked inside the room. "How'd you get a T-Bird's jacket?"

Stephanie bit her lip and sighed. "Gil just thought-"

Cynthia gasped. "It's Gil's? Can I wear it? You don't even look that cold."

Stephanie shook her head. "No, I'm only wearing it because you," She pointed at her sister. "Threw mine in the dirt." And then she mumbled. "In plus, he had a fit about my outfit."

Olivia smiled and shook her best friend's shoulder. "What was that last part?"

Stephanie rolled her eyes. "Shut up."

Cynthia walked away defeated but turned around and stuck her tongue out. "I know where you live, and I will get that jacket."

Stephanie hummed. "Well, hopefully, I won't have the jacket tonight. I think he'll kill me if you steal it."

Olivia rolled her eyes at the bickering sisters. "Why didn't you tell me you and Gil were, you know."

Stephanie turned around so fast she could have gotten whiplash. "We are not."

"Are you sure?" Olivia questioned. "I mean, he gave you his jacket."

Susan walked into the room and sat down beside Stephanie. Before the Zdunowski girl could complain, the teacher started talking. "We will be studying cooking, cleaning, rearing children, sewing, and budgeting of the home. What else does the modern woman need to know?" The teacher asked as she walked around the open classroom.

Susan smiled. "I heard Jane could teach us a few things."

Jane looked down at her lap as some girls in the class laughed, so Stephanie smacked Susan under the table. "I bet you could teach us more." Susan scoffed and looked away.

The teacher cleared her throat. "I'm going to grab the tuna from the cafeteria for our Jell-O molds. You may begin your assigned tasks." With that, the older woman walked out of the room, leaving the arguing teenagers; not a smart move.

"You know, you're right, Susan," Olivia said, causing the blonde to look at her. "I think Jane could teach us a few things about those kinds of girls."

Susan smiled, "Oh, yeah,"

"And it's not what you think," Olivia added. Jane looked up at her as Olivia kept talking. "My cousin in New York knows Jane. She said all the girls there hate Miss Brainy."

Stephanie stopped trying to sew and looked over at Susan. "You see, New York girls are so risqué. They love fun and drinking their problems away." Everyone in the room stopped what they were doing and looked over at the girl's sewing table. "They're sex-crazed teens."

Olivia nodded and added. "So Jane the goody-two-shoes, and her boring killjoy ways drove the girls insane. And she'd kill their fun in every way."

And somehow, the conversation at the girl's sewing table started a mass hysteria of girls jumping around and dancing, trying to act like the girls in New York. And so when the teacher walked in, someone got startled and bumped into Nancy, who was sewing something, and she got a needle pushed straighter through her finger. And the teacher screamed, and Susan told the teacher who started all of the fun. This is how Olivia, Stephanie, Jane, Cynthia, and Nancy got sent to the principal's office.

The girls sat in the wooden chairs outside Ms. McGee's office as Nancy showed off her finger. "This is marvelous. Now I can tell everyone here what I think about them without saying a word." Stephanie tried not to laugh at the strange girl.

Cynthia stood up and stretched out her back. "Hall passes, anyone?" She jumped on the front desk and grabbed the passes.

Jane stood up and pulled her off the desk. "Please, sit down. We don't want to get into any more trouble."

Cynthia put her hands up, "Okay." She mumbled.

Stephanie held her hand out to her little sister, who handed her at least five hall passes. "Thanks, Cynthia."

Jane put her head in her hands. "I don't know how I got caught up in all of this."

Stephanie handed Olivia a hall pass and chuckled. "You have a real funny way of saying thank you, you know that?"

Ms. McGee sighed, "Ms. Valdovinos, my office." Stephanie squeezed Olivia's hand before she stood up and followed the angry little woman.

After a few minutes, Olivia came out of the office with a baggy sweater covering her outfit. She didn't spare a glance at anyone as she left the office. Stephanie sighed and leaned her head on Cynthia's shoulder.

Ms. McGee came out of her office and sighed. "Ladies, first days are difficult. But remember, future misbehavior will not be tolerated."

Nancy stood up and saluted. "Thanks a mil, Ms. McGee."

Cynthia and Stephanie stood up and started to walk out of the office. "Ms. Zdunowski," They both turned around. "A reminder. Try as you might. You'll never be one of the boys."

Cynthia leaned on the door frame. "Kinda like you'll never be a real principal, eh?" With immediate regret, she ran out of the office.

Stephanie was about to follow before Ms. McGee stopped her again. "Ms. Zdunowski, don't fall into the wrong crowd." She motioned at the jacket Steph was still wearing.

Stephanie smiled and glanced at Buddy Aldridge's jacket Jane was wearing. "I won't."
