From a very young age, Riley Lawrence was taught to believe that she could not be a failure. Because failure would bring dishonour and dishonour was a shameful label that would follow her everywhere she went in life. She was made to believe that she had to be a winner, no matter what the consequences may be because the world wasn't kind to those who didn't strive for success.

She was made aware of this hard truth from an early age because she was raised by a father, whose life had hit rock bottom after being proclaimed as a failure by the one person who held the upmost faith in him. He was someone who grew up believing that he could only succeed in life if he was seen as a winner and when his status had been stripped away from him, he had spiralled out of control. He believed his entire life was over, being reduced to merely nothing.

And that was something that he didn't want for his own daughter. He expected better from her, he wanted her to do better than he ever did. He didn't want her to turn into a failure like he did. He wanted her to be a winner, something that he never had the potential to be and this meant that she was destined to be a winner, whether she wanted to or not.

Riley struggled immensely to carry this heavy burden that had been suddenly placed on her shoulders. She was afraid of being a failure but was even more afraid of disappointing the one person that believed in her. She didn't want to bring dishonour to her own lineage because she had been branded as a failure. She was afraid of the consequences that would follow her if she did fail.

And this constricting pressure to succeed only heightened when her natural talents in karate had been discovered. It was expected of her to follow in her father's footsteps and pursue the sport but she didn't understand the sheer amount of talent that she held. She had progressed faster than most kids her age and many had come to quickly recognize her potential to become a champion that no person had ever seen before.

This rapid rise of success had allowed her to be discovered and later recruited by the Black Dragons, the most well-respected dojo in the entire state. She was to ecstatic to finally be recognized by a group of people who were often branded as 'winners' but she didn't quite notice all of the nightmares that were looming in the far shadows, desperate to take control every aspect of her life.

Riley had barely hit the age of fourteen years old and already felt like she was training to be an Olympic athlete with how much of her time and energy was being poured into the sport. Karate practically consumed every waking moment of her day and even when she wasn't training on the mat, she couldn't help but think about it. Her entire life revolved around the sport becoming the upmost importance thing, practically akin to breathing air in her mind.
