Riley Lawrence hated the heat with a living passion. She felt like she couldn't properly function when subjected to the heat and it often brought out the worst in her, fuelling intense emotions of annoyance and discomfort.
She hated that she was constantly covered in an uncomfortably thick layer of perspiration. She hated the feeling of the fabric of her clothes clinging to her already sticky skin. And she hated how the heat would make her light-headed and often too dizzy to think straight. She hated every single thing that was associated with the heat.
The girl couldn't help but feel like she was being boiled from the inside out like a pressure cooker on the highest setting, every time she was forced to endure the uncomfortable rise of temperature.
And it didn't help that she lived in the sunny state of California, where it was practically humid all year round. There was no such thing as cold weather, it was either sweltering heat or just a tolerable warmth. They were lucky to get an occasional light breeze at nights but that was rare.
Riley sometimes questioned how she could be born in such a humid place and not be built for the conditions. She believed that she had all of the makings of someone who would perfectly adjust to the colder climate of other states but the universe decided to mess with her by forcing her to endure the California heat instead.
Riley Lawrence had spent all day, cooped inside of the apartment to avoid the heat. She knew that one step into the outside world and she'd probably die on the spot. She wanted to minimize the amount of discomfort in her life as much as possible, so she avoid the heat like the plague until she was absolutely sure that it had disappeared.
When the hot sun had began to recede, making way for the entrance of the cool evening, Riley had finally decided to enter the outside world for some much needed fresh air. And now that the temperature had begun to dip then she knew it was the perfect time to go out before the darkness hit.
The girl currently stood in the courtyard of the apartment complex, her lacrosse stick tightly clutched in between her hands as she played wall ball by herself. This was her way of trying to improve her mediocre throwing and catching skills, when she was not practicing on the astroturf at school with the rest of her teammates.
Riley harshly threw the rubber ball at the cement wall, not caring that it caused a loud thud to echo through the place before almost failing to catch it with her stick. She repeated this process but this time, made sure not to throw the ball so hard that she would once again struggle to catch it.
