16. Here I Remain Standing

I kept going forward
Like a fool I didn't understand that
The reason for my misfortune
Was to test my character
I endured being hammered
From left and right

The tragedies were hooks
I looked down in shame
Only to see more adversity
That knocked me out
With an uppercut

Ignoring my bruises
I stood back up
And kept going forward
Like a horse with blinkers
My eyes only saw forward
And so forward I went

In the ring of life
I suffered many defeats
At the hands of misery
I fell to the ground more times
Than I could count
With my fingers
But I stood back up
Every single time

In the end I held firm
unlike a fool I knew a truth
That nothing occurs with no purpose and that
Everything that's meant to happen
Always does
Knowing that I stood firm

I had no victories to flaunt
No trophies to validate them
The only medal I received
Were the scars that I bear
They were my trophy
The one I got from fighting life
The one I received from going forth
The only one I have for remaining standing in the face of adversity
