The hall was full of chattering, laughing, drinking, toasting, socializing, dancing and enjoying music, Jake was at the middle of the hall chatting with an influential guy in the business industry. His name was Marcus, just from the way he dressed to the way he looked and composed himself, you could tell he was not just an ordinary person. He had enjoyed the entire gallery session and there was a painting that had caught his eye, he wanted to look at it badly. Jake wanted to show him but his tab was not with him. He tried spotting Cindy on the crowd and finally after identifying her he called her over. They talked for a bit and Cindy headed towards the office. After a few seconds she returned handing the tab over to Jake.
"Sir, here you go, " Jake faced her and picked the tab and thanked her smiling. Cindy was just about to walk away when she heard someone call her.
"Cindy Whales, secretary," she looked at the man and looked at the badged that was on her blouse.
"Yes sir, " Cindy responded,
Instead Marcus turned to Jake and asked him, "is this your secretary?"
"Yes she is."
"It's nice meeting you, you are a pretty young lady, your feet will lead you to good places." Marcus said.
"It's nice meeting you too Marcus, thank you are very much,'' Cindy said as she turned to leave, from a close distant she could hear both men whispering.
"That's a pretty and focused secretary you got there, I could see you throwing glances at her throughout the ceremony and even now." Marcus said laughing.
"You got a pretty sharp eye Marcus, I am planning to propose to her in the future but she's a tough one, I don't want to insist on things and scare her off you know."
"One step at a time brother you got work to do," Marcus said as he toasted his drink with him.
"What! propose to who, he must be dreaming a deceptive dream," Cindy murmured as she headed toward the serving point before she could rush back to the office.
It was just the perfect time, everyone was out of reach and out of sight. She crossed paths with Andria and George the IT guy and smiled at them, she then made one last glance and saw that Jake was still in deep conversation with Marcus and other two guys and one woman had joined them. She then walked to the washroom and headed towards the office.
She turned the door knob went in then headed straight to Jakes office. She touched everything with care so that no one would know that someone was there.
"Where are they, please show up both of you , please, please," she said with an anxious tone, she bent and pulled open the last drawer , she then lifted the files that were there and saw them. She wanted to scream but could not, she didn't know how to express herself. She took them and kissed them, she was just about to place them in her bag then thought to herself,
" He'll find out they are missing, how will I explain this, arrrrg! what will I say? " she covered her face and felt disappointed.
"Should I just put them in my bag and run off and never look behind after all I'm about to quit....but that won't be professional, arrrg I hate this situation, what do I do? what do I do? I need my credit card. Should I just ask him, I have to, I got no choice."
She lifted the files in the drawer again and sighed, she then took the credit card and diary and placed them back where she had found them. It was around five in the evening, she really wanted to leave.
"I'll do it in the morning when everyone is at work, it feels safer," she said to herself then carried her bag to leave.
Just as she was about to touch the door knob and envelope slid in from the bottom of the door, a white one to be precise. The back was written...to Cindy, she bent down and picked it wondering who could have dropped it. She immediately came to her senses and opened the door in splits of seconds to see who was there. There was no one to her surprise, she teared the envelope from the top and pulled out a paper, the scent was familiar, the perfume from that day. She breathed heavily and didn't want to cause a scene she reached out for her inhaler and inhaled two puffs to calm down.
Cindy was afraid to open the paper but she had to so as to guarantee her safety. The paper was blank on both sides, nothing was written on it only that despicable smell that made her want to die. She wanted to rush out and head to the police but how could she give out a blank paper with the smell of perfume as evidence. She could not also keep it, she didn't want to. She teared the paper in anger and stood there shaking and crying silently not knowing what to do then she remembered that Justin had called her a few days ago.
