When we make it back to Skull Rock, Steve was light-headed from the blood loss and in pain. He tried to insist he was fine as Nacy fussed over him, but she argued against him. "If it's okay with you, Steve- I can heal you with a bit of my blood. All your senses, except touch, will be enhanced for an hour or so, but your wounds will be closed, and you won't have to worry about bleeding out."
"Absolutely not! Steve will not drink vampire blood. I won't allow it."
"It's a good thing I'm not asking you, then. I'm asking Steve, and you aren't his mother. He can use his own words to deny me if he wants." Eddie doesn't bother holding back his snort as Robin does, and Nancy glares at me in frustration. "Steve, you can't possibly want to drink her blood. It's monstrous."
Eddie and I stiffen at her words, and Steve weakly pushes her off, looking at her in disbelief. "It's not monstrous. That's how she eats. The real monster is this Vecna dude that's terrorizing our town." He looks my way with determination sparkling in his eyes, "Give it to me, Y/N."
"Steve, no."
He ignores Nancy and slumps onto the floor in pain, wincing when he looks at his wounds. Pulling out my pocket knife, I slice my finger, "Open up. I can't give you too much." He hesitates, then leans his head back as he opens his mouth. I only allow a small drop to enter his mouth and let my finger heal itself.
Steve cringes at the taste, but within a few seconds, his wounds heal before our eyes.
His eyes widen, and he pushes himself to stand, "Wow. I can hear everything." He looks us all over, "And see all the pores on your face, yeesh." I sigh, "Yeah. Give it a few minutes, and don't think about it. Thinking about it will only make you get overwhelmed." He nods and stands near Robin. "So, uh, this place is like Hawkins, but with monsters and nasty shit?"
I nod, "Pretty much."
"Wait. Watch out for the vines. It's a hive mind." Nancy warns Eddie before he steps on one. "A what?" Steve steps out of the shadows, "All the creepy crawlies around here. They're, like, one or something. You step on a vine, you're stepping on a bat, you're stepping on Vecna."
Again with that name.
It feels right- being attached to the monster we're fighting this time. It does feel like that's its name. Vecna, Vecna, Vecna. Why does my heart beat faster to that name? Vecna, Vecna, Vecna. I don't understand why, but it feels like I have to defeat him. Vecna, Vecna, Vecna.
"Y/N? Baby, are you okay?"
I snap out of my thoughts to see everyone staring at me. "Sorry. It's a weird thought that came to me." I glance at the other three, then back to Eddie, "I'll tell you later." There was no way I was going to tell him my train of thought and possible revelation when we were currently stuck here.
Not taking that risk.
No sir.
Not when Steve had a bad habit of not keeping his mouth shut and being loud when he hears something that surprised him.
I sensed the tremor before it happens and adjusted my stance as I grabbed onto Eddie and Robin so they wouldn't fall. Steve senses it too and adjusts accordingly, grabbing onto Nancy before she falls. "Guns seem like a good idea to me." Robin nods, agreeing with Eddie, "Yeah, me too."
—------
Ignoring the pep talk the boys gave each other, the awkward air around Nancy when I was near, and another round of the earthquake, I'd say we are doing really well so far. That might be a little biased, considering I hunt monsters for a living, and I can feel the fear oozing off of everyone.
