I had been waiting to destroy the man who took my sister from me my entire life. I had been waiting to hurt the man who killed Ariana, who caused her death, even longer than that.
I couldn't quite remember life before him, and I struggled to imagine a life without him, but it would happen... one day.
"It is not lost on those of us in leadership," Vogel began. It had been five days since my dinner with Gellert, and finally the Plan was in motion.
Stood on Grindelwald's left, I kept a close eye on all those around me. It was clear that the others in his ranks were hesitant to trust... which they had every right to. To me, it only mattered that I had dear old Gelly wrapped around my finger. I would have a life without him... one day.
"...that we are currently a world divided," Vogel continued. "Each day brings talk of another conspiracy. Each hour another dark whisper. These whispers have only increased in recent days... with the addition of a third candidate."
If the Supreme Mugwump, the man who was supposed to lead all wizard-kind was so corrupt, so selfish and serving only to his wants and needs, then was there truly a candidate out there with a heart pure enough to be a leader?
Credence was gone from my side, sent by Gellert to patrol with the others. I would soon join them, and that would not be a request.
"There is only one way to leave absolutely no doubt..." he ventured. "...that a worthy candidate exists amongst the three you have been presented." He entered the small temple behind him, and all those around us took several steps forward, leaned their heads closer as though that would mean they were the first to understand how the decision would be made.
The human race and their ever-evolving curiosity. It would be the end of them.
Vogel emerged with the innocent Qilin... which had been ripped from life and risen from slumber to suit Gellert Grindelwald's needs.
"As every schoolboy and girl knows... the Qilin is the purest of creatures in our wonderful magical world. It cannot be deceived. Let the Qilin unite us." The cheers roared.
Gellert bent his head so that only I could hear. "Observe the rooftops. Keep an eye on Albus and ensure that the others lock their attention on Newt."
I nodded without looking him in the eye, apparating to the lower town. The rooftops were full of Dark Wizards, Gellert's forces intent on finding every case they could.
"Any sign of them?" I posed, approaching Helmut's back. I had only recently learned his name, the odd amalgamation of words adding to his... unique nose. I refrained every second from pushing him off the building and allowing him to be trampled by the crowd.
"No," he muttered.
"That wasn't a very pleasant tone Helmut," I commented.
He snarled, if the movement of his face could be called a snarl without... a real nose. "I don't trust you."
"And you think I do?" I returned.
"I've given you no reason to trust me."
"No," I denied, feigning shock as I placed a hand on his arm. "No, I mean that I don't trust me either." His expression faltered.
I spotted Jacob Kowalski out of the corner of my eyes. Accompanied by Albus Dumbledore, who didn't hold a case, they hid behind a wall.
Merlin, I cursed internally, smiling at Helmut and casting my gaze in the opposite direction. Theseus and Lally.
