I could never forget about Credence. I could never banish him from my mind, I could never be completely happy while I knew that he was somewhere else.
He wasn't my son, I knew, of course I knew that, but he was Anna's son and I'd be damned if I didn't protect him... because I was too young to protect her.
I was made a Healer two months ago, and had been working since the minute I graduated. It was like a switch had gone off when I first stepped foot inside St. Mungo's. I had struggled through training, as had Theseus – there were several nights that we had toast for dinner – but I made it.
Despite knowing that I wanted it, I was constantly questioning whether it was truly what was meant for me, but now? Now, as I walked into a room to check on a young kid who got caught up in a stinging jinx, as I watched his kind smile and I spotted the cards that his friends had wrote, I knew that I had made the right choice.
"Natalia!" a voice called as I wandered down the hallway.
"Jonathon," I returned, stopping for a moment. He had finished training a couple of months before I did.
"How you been?" he questioned, titling his head with a smile.
"Brilliant," I replied, matching his gesture. "I'm exactly where I want to be."
"Good, good," he breathed, placing a hand on his hip as his thoughts took over.
"Is everything alright?" I asked then, allowing my smile to fall.
He met my gaze. "You want to get dinner tonight?"
My head shook slowly, deflating. "Jon..."
"No, no," he muttered in response. "I get it, you're completely out of my league."
"No, I... I have a boyfriend," I explained. "Been with him... almost four years now."
Brow perked, Jonathon's eyes widened. "Four years and no ring?"
"It's complicated."
"If I was him, I'd have married you in less than a year."
I smiled. "We have an... interesting history. Marriage isn't something we want to rush into."
He nodded, clearly disappointed and I suddenly felt horrible. "Well, want to get dinner anyway? Not a date, not a ploy, just some food after work."
Theseus was working late tonight. I had planned to just each leftovers. "Sure."
Jonathon rushed off and I hurried into the next room, turning towards the empty bed. My next patient was supposed to be in here.
"Dinner dates." His voice chilled me to the bone. "Little Natty going out with a man who isn't her little Scamander."
My hand was already reaching for my wand as a I turned to face him. The sun setting, Gellert Grindelwald stood leaned against the sill with a gentle smile.
"I haven't seen you in a while," I commented, keeping my voice as level as I could.
"You didn't look at the memories."
I had wanted to. "I don't trust anything you give me."
He tutted. "That's not kind of you."
"Coming from the master of cruel."
"Is that my new title amongst Aurors? Oh wait... you're not one of those anymore," he began, taking careful steps forward. "You gave it up to tend to sick people."
