Maxine
Everyone's gone home and most of the pack is inside. Axels coffin has been buried and his tomb stone is above. Collin asked me to stay outside until everyones left because he wants to open the box with me. We picked a spot beside Axels grave facing the sunset and city lights. Theres a breeze but Collin brought me out a sweater I could borrow. He's holding the box taping his finger against it re-reading the words 'Gifts for my dear gifted children'. I reach out to stop his finger tapping and he brings his attention to me.
He sighs and asks "Might as well open it and stop waiting right?" I nod. We both put our hand on the flip lock and flip it up together. He lifts the lid and were left staring at a box full of items and letters.
"Suppose it's split of different things for each or are they together?" I ask. He lifts out a stack of letters that has his name on it.
"I think they're labeled for us." He says under his breath but I still caught it. He's probably right anyway. I take out a ring and a bottle. Theres one note with my name on it. I take it out as well. I glance over at Collin and he's reading through the letters. I turn back to the note and notice its a little brown around the corners showing how old it is. It's written with an old fashioned quill and ink. I look to see who it's from and it's from dad. Not that I should be surprised. His hand writing is very clean and swift too. I start to read the note hoping it has an explanation to these gifts.
'Dear Maxine, If you're reading this then I'm probably dead. Your mother has most likely found me. I don't know how old you are while reading this but I do know you've grown up to become a strong beautiful women. You may think that being a hybrid is a curse but it's not. It's a blessing. I hope you've found your brother Collin at this point. I hope that Axel has taken care of you along with Scott. They are my best buds. If you think people are judging you because you're taking forever to harness your inner werwolf they aren't. They know that you are going to become a powerful women someday. However being a hybrid can have its downsides. It takes longer to be good at being a fairy and werwolf. That's why I've supplied you with a ring and a potion. They are magic. Before I escaped from the fairy colony I made sure to grab these objects to help you in the future which is now. The potion will enhance your fairy side so that you can control all elements like your mother. All you have to do is swing it in one go. Heads up it tastes starchy and salty at first but it goes away within a couple on minutes. The Ring however is a special crystal thats been cursed to help you keep control. A side effect from being a hybrid is you can never get full control over one side. This ring helps you get full control so you can choose when to bring out the werwolf side. Your brother is older than you and I didn't get the chance to know him so I don't know his effects. I knew you until you were five so I know some of the side effects you have. I know it's probably aggravating and upsetting to you that you never got to know me that well but I'm always watching over you. Don't forget you are gifted. Love: Robert Doles (Dad).'
When I finish reading I notice a couple tears have trickled down my face and I'd been crying. My hand is also locked with Collins hand. He's still reading his letters though. I set the note down carefully and pick up the ring. I slide it onto my finger and its cold to the touch. It's gold with a glistening red gem on it. It looks like the spark werwolf's get when we're mad. A shiver goes down my spine and my eyes start to sting.
"Max? Are you okay?" Collin asks looking worried. The pain goes away after a couple seconds and I nod.
"Are you sure? What did the ring do?" he asks not believing me.
"Yeah I'm fine. It's supposed to make me be able to control my werewolf side better."
"Oh- Did you want to test it out?"
"Nah I'll just trust it..." I say weary. I reach for the bottle but Collin reaches out to my hand to get me to stop.
"Are you sure that's safe?" he asks looking panicked. I nod.
"It just tastes weird apparently. It's supposed to taste starchy and salty."
"How is it supposed to help you exactly?"
"He said it will make me powerful like mom. Like with the whole using all the elements and stuff." I say rolling my eyes and pulling my hand out of his hold. Before he can come at me with an argument I rip the cork out and down it in one swing just like he said to do. It isn't a big bottle anyway.
Ew gross! This does taste awful! I hate the fact that it's exactly the way he described it too. As it goes down it starts to burn. I can't help but cough.
"Max are you good!? Why would you drink that?!" Collin asks starting to freak out. A couple seconds later the burning and bad taste goes away.
"I'm fine, calm down. I drank it because the note said too." I say rolling my eyes and putting the bottle back.
"Max you could have died!"
"Calm down I'm not going to die!"
"Looked like it."
"Looks can be deceiving." I say standing up. He rolls his eyes while putting his letters back in the box and closing it up. Looking out to the city lights and the beautiful sunset, he joins me standing up leaving the box on the ground and grabs my hand.
Looks like the myth I was told as a kid is true. Fairies are real and I'm related to some. At least now the myth is broken and we can move on to a brighter future.
