Pope was in the seat behind John B, JJ in shotgun, and JB driving. I was behind JJ, on the floor once more, whilst Sarah and Kie were across from me. "Ah, crap! The tide!" John B groans, making me peek my head up front. There was no road anymore. It was all underwater.
"Oh, this doesn't look good," Pope mutters, looking up front as well.
"How deep is that?" Kiara asks the group. I keep looking up front, trying to figure it out myself. There was no way of telling, to be honest.
"I dunno." John B finally answers Kiara. "The road's gone." Right after that, he jolts to a stop and we all rock a little bit. We were right in front of the swamp road.
"Tide rose a little faster than I thought it would," JJ admits, shrugging his shoulders. He was doing the huge cheek thing. Where your tongue sticks out your cheek. I could tell he was very deep in thought.
"Just a little bit." John B nods, also trying to concoct a plan.
"Uh, John B, how high are the spark plugs?" JJ turned to face the brunette and he looked a little concerned. John B looks over at him and then back out the front window.
"They're good. We're fine." Now what kind of half-assed answer was that?
"How high are they!" JJ and Pope say this in unison, their voices getting kind of panicky.
"Oh... um..." John B stretches his head out his window and looks back. "Just above the taillight."
I feel like everyone just completely side-eyed each other. "Okay, so that's what? 3 feet?" Pope glances around at all of us and JJ nods.
"That's three feet, yeah." JJ was still deep in thinking mode.
Kiara shakes her head, making me turn my attention to her. "That water can't be three feet deep." Nah, we shouldn't be giving these guys any ideas. But, what other choice do we have?
"Then what's the problem?" John B seemed to be the only one ready to face the storm. I could tell because everyone was looking at him suspiciously. Like, they wanted to say something.
"Not a problem. No, we're good. We're good. She'll make it." JJ nods and faces forward again. It almost looked like he was trying to convince himself we'd be fine. No, we barely made it through the last time... there was no way this was gonna work. Guess it's time to pray.
"Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts. Hold on to something." I give Sarah and Kie and look of complete recklessness. "We're going into hyperdrive." I clutch onto JJ's seat.
"I'll say a quick prayer." I hear JJ mutter, and he does the sign of the cross.
"Three. Two. One." John B presses on the gas and we're literally moving nowhere. I could tell that at any minute we could fly forward, so I didn't let go.
"You got this! You got this!" I hear JJ yell this over all the grunts and screams, as we take off. I squeeze my eyes shut, not wanting to watch a second of this. I could hear the water hitting the windows. "Faster! Faster!" I hear JJ scream. Not a good sign.
That's when I hear John B start to freak out and I know we're screwed. "John B I swear to God if you kill us I will literally kill you!" I screech this at the top of my lungs, tightening my grip on the seat as I feel the Twinkie slip and slide.
"Speed is your friend. Speed is your friend, John B!" I keep my eyes closed until I hear cheering from the rest of the group. I look out the window, and I see us sliding right off the road into the fucking swamp.
"No. No. No. No. No. No." John B mutters as he brakes to a stop.
"I think we miscalculated." Pope squints out the window and I give him a look as if to say, "You think so?"
