Vasu’s POV
I released a groan and furiously snapped my head in the direction where I heard my name. It was Ms. Devishka Maaran, also known as Deva. She was a co-worker of mine, and we had a history. Madhu placed her hand on my chest and pushed herself away. She cleared her throat, closed her eyes, and started to blush. I turned my head towards where Deva was standing."Detective Vasu, long time no see," Deva said. She pointed her finger towards the empty chair opposite to  us. "Do you mind if I join you guys?" she asked.
I just want to be alone with my girl for sometime. Madhu lifted her head, her gaze locked with Deva. "Yeah, sure. You guys continue. I will wait in the car," Madhu said and was about to leave. I grabbed her arm and said, "Sit, sweetheart! It's not important," as I pulled Madhu towards me and  wrap my hand around her .I asked Deva , "What do you want, Detective Deva?" My gaze remained locked with hers, but my hand stayed on Madhu Deva's gaze shifted to Madhu, and with a smirk on her face, she asked, "By the way, who is this fatass girl?" I felt Madhu's gaze on me, so I tightened my grip on her waist.
My anger reached its maximum; no one has the right to talk to my girl the way she did. "You better watch your tone when you talk to my girl, Detective!" I warned her, half-yelling. I balled my hand into a fist and slammed it on the table. I felt  Madhu getting nervous after seeing my reaction, she gently placed her hand on mine and squeezed it. "Vasu!" she called me in a soft tone, which made me sigh out. Deva gasped and asked with narrowed eyes, "My girl... What does it mean?" I smiled and replied, "Means she is MINE... My wife-to-be!" I turned my head towards Madhu and kissed her forehead. She smiled nervously.Deva’s eyes widened and scoff , she was about to speak ‘’ Nice meeting you Detective Deva , I hope not to see you around ‘’ I said and stood from my seat . I grab Madhu’s file , my gadgets  along  with car keys ‘’ We are leaving !’’ I said by  stretching  my hand towards Madhu. She stood up from seat and hold my hands. We both walked towards the parking lot , Madhu didn’t ask anything about what just happen , we both entered  into the car and drove off from the office.
While driving, she remained silent, not uttering a word. Her gaze remained fixed on the window. But it's my responsibility to tell her who Deva is. I stopped the car and said, "Madhu," calling her name. She slowly turned her head towards me, her brown eyes piercing right through mine. "Please, just get it off your chest. I can't take your silence," I murmured, turning my head towards the window. She remained silent, and I realized her gaze was still on me. I didn't have enough courage to look at her right now because of what had happened earlier.. Okay! She is not speaking , I turn myself towards her  and confused by her neutral expression—no confusion, nervousness, or anything. I sighed and asked, "What?" She simply smiled and replied, "Nothing... Ummm... I am waiting for you to calm down!" She held my hands and continued, "Listen, if you want to talk, we will talk, but not here. Let's discuss it at home!"  she said and I nodded in agreement.
I drove the car out of the alley and onto the highway. After a thirty-minute drive, we finally reached  home. Upon parking the car, Madhu opened the door and hastily ran off. I furrowed my brows, wondering, "What the hell is she doing?" I opened my door and stepped out, raising both hands in the air. "Sweetheart, would you mind waiting for me?" I asked. Madhu stopped and turned around, while I quickly grabbed all the belongings from the car. She scoffed "No! I won't’’ she replied with  a wink on her face before running  inside the house. I smiled inwardly "You're teasing me, sweetheart! Wait for my turn," I muttered under my breath. I gathered all the items from the car and started walking towards the front door and pushing it open. After  entered the house, tossing everything onto the living room table and removed  my jacket. While I was settling  down, my phone began vibrating with the caller ID displaying an official NYPD number. Letting out a frustrated sigh, I answered the call.
After a while, the front door suddenly opened, and I turned my head towards it, finding Priya entering with a bag full of boxes. I smiled at her, and she headed straight to the kitchen. Once I finished my call, I went to the kitchen to get some water and discovered Priya unpacking the food boxes she had brought. "Priya, what's all this? Why are you troubling yourself? You know I can cook!" I sarcastically asked her. Priya furrowed her brows and replied with her arms in the air, "I know you can cook, but Malathy Ma insisted." I smiled, and Priya opened her arms, tilting her head. We embraced each other in a hug. "I'm happy for you both. She is the most precious one, Vasu. Please take care of her and don't let anyone hurt or break her again. She has gone through so much lately, and I love Madhu very much," Priya whispered while caressing my back. We pulled away from the hug, and she asked with raised eyebrows, "Promise me, Vasu." I replied firmly, "I Promise." Priya smiled, cleared her throat "Okay! Enjoy the lunch. Bye." She said  and  left. I shook my head "Everyone loves you, sweetheart, but definitely not more than me’’ I murmured.
I went to my mother's room and slowly pushed the door open. My mother shushed me. My eyes fell on Madhu, who was peacefully sleeping in my mother's lap like a baby. I approached the bed, pulled a small table, and sat in front of them. My hands traveled over Madhu's head, caressing her gently. Suddenly, my mother said, "You are lucky to have her in your life, beta!" My gaze locked with hers, and I started to blush. "How long has she been sleeping, Ma?" I asked. ‘’ For a while , when she came inside and started to tell how did you surprise her , she told me everything and started to yawing . So , I pulled her towards my lap after that she slept off ‘’ my mother said . My gaze was locked on Madhu, but it didn’t stay long ‘’ she also told me what happen in cafeteria !’’ she said which made me jerked my head towards my mother, unsure of how to react. "What?... Ma, it's nothing," I stammered. My mother interrupted, saying, "She's just scared of losing you!" I was about to respond but stopped when we heard a groan from Madhu. Her eyes opened and landed on both of us.
She jerked herself from my mother's lap and asked, "How long have I been asleep?" while wiping her lashes with the back of her hands. I scoffed and replied, "Two hours, sweetheart!" as I winked at my mother. Madhu turned her head towards my mother and exclaimed, "What! Why didn't you wake me up, Ma? It's already past afternoon, you need to have food and medicine!" Then she shifted her gaze to me and asked, punching my shoulder, "And why couldn't you wake me up?" I groaned and said, "Hey," while reaching for her hand to remove a strand of hair. My mother cleared her throat and said, while caressing Madhu's hair, "Madhu, can I talk to Vasu alone?" Madhu turned her head towards my mother and replied, "Okay, Ma! What do you want to eat? I'll prepare it." I interjected, " Priya brought us lunch. It's in the kitchen. Go and check, sweetheart." She nodded and left the room. My gaze locked with my mother's, and she tapped the empty space beside her on the bed. I sighed and sat beside her. She held both of my hands and asked, "Explain in detail." I slowly explained everything about Deva's sudden appearance and how she talked about Madhu. My mother remained silent, closing her eyes for a while as her head rested on the headboard of the bed.
The room is filled with silence; neither my mother nor I spoke. My mother slowly lifted her head and sighed, "Tell her everything!" she said, and my eyes widened. "Ma… what are you saying? Deva is not in my life anymore," I said in a pissed-off tone, trying to remove my hand from hers, but I couldn't. "Vasu! Did you…?" I cut her off. "I will not let Deva ruin my relationship with Madhu. She is the one I have been waiting for; she is my everything," I said, jerking away from the bed. I was about to leave the room, but my mother's words made me stop. "If you don't want to spoil your relationship with Madhu, then tell her. She is going to spend her entire life with you, so it is important for her to know everything about you. If Madhu knows the truth about Deva… I swear to you… just in case Deva crosses paths with your life… Madhu will take care of her," she said. I turned my head towards my mother. I think my mother is right; I want to tell Madhu. It's best that she knows everything about me. I sighed, "I will talk to her," I said, and she nodded. I closed the door and went to the kitchen. I saw Madhu assembling food on plates. I am nervous about where to start. I went near her, where she was standing, snaked my hands around her waist, resting my head on her shoulder. "Hi," I said. I heard a chuckle from her. "Hi," she replied. Madhu sighed, "What do you want to have for lunch?" Madhu asked me. I gripped her tightly, swerving her around swiftly. "What are you doing?" she asked, but her gaze wasn't on me. "Look at me, sweetheart! We need to talk," I said.
Madhu’s POV
After reaching the kitchen, I washed my face and wiped it with a shawl. I went near the kitchen slab where the  bag which was brought by my sister-in-law  and I started to unpack it. While assembling the food, the images of what had happened in the cafeteria kept repeating in my head. I was lost in thoughts when I felt a hand snake around me . "Vasu," I whispered in my head. "Hi," he said. I couldn't hold back the chuckle that escaped from my lips. "Hi," I replied. "What do you want for lunch?" I asked Vasu. But instead of replying, he swiftly turned around me, making my heart skip a beat. "What are you doing?" I asked, but I couldn't meet his eyes. If our gaze locked, he would understand what was going on in my head. But suddenly, what Vasu said made me really nervous. "Look at me, sweetheart! We need to talk," Vasu said. Until he was done talking, I knew he wouldn't be himself. I closed my eyes and sighed, slowly opened them, and locked eyes with Vas
We looked at each other for a few seconds, pulling away from each other when we heard Sharadha Ma clearing her throat. She smiled and said, "You two continue whatever you are doing. I just came to grab my food." My cheeks grew warmer. "Ma... sorry, I was about to come..." I struggled to find the right words, but Sharadha Ma grabbed her food and left. I turned towards Vasu. "Don't do that ever again, especially in front of Ma! If you do it again, I will... bite you," I said. He scoffed. "I can take the chances, sweetheart!" he said, taking a step forward, leaving no space between us. Vasu pulled me by my waist and held me tightly. "Can we talk now, sweetheart? Please..." he said in a soft tone.
I nodded, my hands resting on his collar. He sighed, "Listen! There is nothing going on between me and Deva... About a year ago, she was my co-worker." He kept his gaze locked with mine as he continued, "We worked together for about six months. She took the step and told me she liked me... Time passed, and we took the next step and confessed our feelings to each other. I introduced her to Ma, and everything was going well until I brought up the topic of marriage. She agreed but had one condition: after marriage, she wanted to move out and live a happy life without Ma. Who is ….." He started to stammer, and tears gathered in his eyes. I gently cupped his face and said, "Let it all out." He sighed, "She doesn't want my mother to stay with us after marriage. I told her that I can't leave my mother behind and start a new life. I also told her about my father. Initially, she agreed, but one day I came to know that Deva had threatened my mother, forcing her to convince me that she would go back to India with our relatives... Ma didn't tell me about it," I furrowed my brows, processing the information. Vasu replied, "One day, Ma told me she wanted to go back to India... I was wondering why suddenly my mother wanted to move out, and it disturbed me greatly. I shared this with Deva, and she thought it was a nice idea. Then something inside me made me question if Deva had spoken to my mother. So, I checked the camera I had placed in my mother's room for monitoring her movements . After seeing the video, I was shocked and confronted Deva. Finally, she admitted to it and spoke ill of Ma. That was the moment I broke up with her, saying that I didn't want a girl who didn't know the value  of family... That's it. After that, she got transferred and left... I haven't been in contact with her for a year. I swear, sweetheart!" he said, sighing in relief, but his gaze remained fixed on the floor. He slowly removed  his hands from my waist, but I held onto him before he could pull away.
My eye peered into his and I cupped his face ‘’ Hey …. Listen! Its okay … I will not  let deva hurt you both .. especially you  … I promise you that …. If that bitch comes near you or Ma  or  If I see her again , I will  definitely kill her for hurting you ‘’ I said and  reached out to stroke the outline of his face with my small hand and he nestled into it , kissing my palm which made me  smile . Can I ask you something?" I asked. He nodded. "What made you think that I am the one for you?" I questioned. He furrowed his brows and let out a throaty chuckle, pressing his body closer to mine. "The moment I saw your photo in your house, I fell in love with you... The moment I saw you at the airport, I knew. My heart was telling me that you are the one. My heart had been waiting for you only... After you came into my life, I felt alive again. I am so happy to see how you are attached to my mother and take care of her, and how you respect others’’ He continued, "Loving everyone and taking care of everyone, including me," he said. I smiled and asked, "What makes you think that?" raising my eyebrows and wrapping my hands around his neck. Vasu scoffed, "Okay, for example... You come here to take care of my mother, you prepare food for her, but it's always something extra. When I leave for work, my home is a mess, but when I return, it feels like a home... Don't you think I would figure it out?" he asked, tightening his hold on my waist. "There are so many things... If I started explaining, my whole life wouldn't be enough," he said. My cheeks turned red, and I admitted, "Yes, I did that." He smiled and said, "You are the magic that happened in my life! Who makes me feel alive again ... I know I'm not good with speeches or being romantic, but I want you to know that I love you always... You are my world, sweetheart!" He took a deep breath and leaned his head against mine.
After Vasu's heartfelt words, tears filled my eyes, and I hugged him tightly. "I love you too, " I said, gently caressing his back. We held onto each other for a while, neither of us wanting to let go. "Let's eat... the food is getting cold!" I suggested. Vasu responded, "I don't want anything. Let's just stay like this, Madhu! Please... don't ever leave me..." His words were filled with vulnerability. I pulled away from the hug, cupping his face in my hands. "I am not leaving!" I reassured him, wiping away the tears that rolled down his cheeks. He hugged me again, finding solace in our embrace.
After we both became calmer and had our lunch, Vasu went to his study room to take a call, and I went to Sharadha Ma's room to give her medicine. But before I could ask her anything, she informed me that she had already taken the medicines. I helped her lie down on the bed and tucked her in with a blanket. When I returned to the living room, I found Vasu sleeping on the sofa . With a smile on my face I approached him and covered him with a blanket and gently I stroke his hair. Suddenly, he grabbed me and pulled me into his arms. "Vasu," my heart skipped a beat. He wrapped his arms around me and said in a husky voice, his eyes still closed, "Don't mess up my hair, sweetheart." I smiled and said, "Vasu, I have to go home!" But Vasu didn't open his eyes. Instead, he buried his head in the crook of my neck, and I wrapped my arms around his neck in return. "You're not going anywhere," he declared, holding me tightly. I smiled and replied, "But Mamma will go mad." Instead of letting me go, Vasu tightened his grip around my waist. "It's already taken care of. You promised me, today is my day with you " he said as he settled in my lap and fell asleep. I couldn't help but smile at the sight. I took out my phone and called my mother to inform her that I was at Vasu's home and also shared the news that I got a job at the NYPD. Everyone in my family was happy for me.
