Y/N wakes up late, blinking at the sun shining in her face. It takes her a moment to realize what day it is, but after half a minute of yawning and stretching, rubbing the sleep from her eyes and more yawning, she spots a card laying on her desk that definitely wasn't there when she went to bed and remembers.

It's her birthday!

She throws off the blanket and jumps up. The card is from Steve, wishing her a happy birthday, apologizing he has to work today, and telling her to come by the DX to see him later if she wants to.

She rolls her eyes. Of course she wants to.

After getting dressed she immediately leaves and heads to the Curtis' house. Dad is at work too — unlike her brother he didn't even bother to at least write her a birthday card — and she doesn't feel like sitting home alone. Sodapop and Darry will be working too, of course, but it's a Saturday morning, so the chances are good that Ponyboy is there to keep her company while she eats breakfast.

She calls "hey" and enters the house without waiting if there's an answer, letting the door slam shut behind her.

"Hey," Pony calls back from his room, and after a few seconds he appears in the living room, book in hand and looking for something he can use as a bookmark. "Happy birthday!"

"Thanks. You guys got any chocolate cake left for me? I ain't had breakfast yet."

Y/N is already walking to the kitchen as she speaks, and Pony's confirmation that there is indeed some left is entirely unnecessary because she's already taking it from the icebox.

By the time she's poured herself a glass of chocolate milk and sits down at the table she's eaten half the slice, and the rest is gone within a minute's time too.

"You got any plans for today, Pony?"

"No, I was just gonna read a bit. See if I can finish this book today."

She glances at where he's placed the makeshift bookmark. "You're only in the middle!"

Ponyboy shrugs, and Y/N mirrors the movement.

"Well, okay, whatever you say. But do you maybe wanna go by the DX with me?"

"Sure. When do you wanna go?"

"Whenever you're ready."

"Alright, let's go then."

When they get there Y/N waves at Soda and puts a finger to her lips, pointing to Steve who's working on a car in the back and hasn't noticed her yet.

Soda nods and watches with a grin as she sneaks up to her brother and jumps on his back, yelling "Boo!".

Steve drops his screwdriver with a curse, but he knows there's only one girl who would do something like that, and quickly regains his composure, grabbing the arms wrapped around his neck so she has to stay where she is before spinning around with her until she's squealing for him to stop.

When he finally lets her down the room continues to spin before her eyes, and she smacks his arm, laughing.

"You ass! Now 'm all dizzy!"

"Yeah, Steve, how dare you treat the birthday girl like that!" Soda agrees as he comes up behind her and messes up her hair, despite her efforts of swatting his hand away.
