~BEN's POV~
As the flare fell we took off getting into position, I rushed through the woods, grabbing the bag of pipe bombs and began carefully laying them out amongst a hole in the ground. A large, deep gaping cavern, that I slowly descended inside of- tracing the bombs around like sticks of dynamite.
My human, had gone off with the two proxies being as fast as they where, while I was more of a lagger, being on opposite ends of signals then they were. I took small, careful steps. My red eyes giving me vision in the dark, showing me where all the creatures slept.
Hundreds of them, scattered the ground, sleeping, unstirred- laying in wait for the mid day sun to awake them by flooding the cave with light. As I made my way out, just before my foot stepped out the entrance-
I felt it.
A strong cry for help.
" Toby?" I breathed, my eyes flicking to my left.
Three meters away.
I turned towards the cave, my anxiety rising.
Almost perfect.
I quickly lit the fuse, I made sure it was burning before turning and running towards Toby's direction, stumbling over roots and shrub. I may not have been as fast as him, or as agile. I did admire that about him- though there was something I had above everyone here-
knowing his location.
Two meters .
My chest heaved and burned, the air feeling hot in my throat.
One meter,
I slid down a hill, grasping at a good sized rock in my hand, as I reached the bottom of the hill, I could see him finally.
Toby laid under the beast, his axe stressing under the dogs weight. I didn't hesitate to toss the rock, hitting it in the back of the head. " Over here you fuckin mutt, come after me" I shouted, walking forward. The beast paused, turning to me with one glowing yellow eye.
It snarled, ripping Toby's axe from his hands as he began to stalk towards me, biting the thick wood in half as it disregarded the boy under him. " That's right, good boy. Come to daddy" I cooed, reaching for my wire.
My eyes flicked to Toby once in awhile, who was struggling to get to his feet, I could tell by the way he was holding his head, he had begun to have an episode. " It's okay Toby. I got it. Just breath" I tried to assure him, jumping out the way as he lunged at me. I pulled my wire free from my belt, throwing the middle over the dog's neck as it ran at me, catching it in a poor man's lasso, just for it to pull free, leaving small gashes in it's wake.
"B-Ben.. th-the tr-trip wire. " Toby grunted, trying to get his words out as he tried to look at me, just to look away and close his eyes tightly out of fear. Whispering soft I'm sorrys to himself.
I considered his words, wrapping a bit of my weapon over my hand as I refocused the dogs attention on me. " Don't worry Tobias, I got this " I assured him, " just focus on yourself" I paused to move from the dogs way.
" And remember. It's not real"
Toby's eyes met mine for a second, as those words left my mouth. A look of hopefulness as I began to ran, leading the dog into the trip wire.
I could hear it letting out deep barks and hisses, the sounds of all the voices it's taken screamed behind it's barks, leaving my ears to ache in it's wake. I grunted, turning a corner and picking up another rock, tossing it into the dogs face grinning as I watched the smiling beast whimper and charge at me, but I was too slow.
