"You're the reason I'm dead."

I look up at my mother's face. Half of it is torn apart, her flesh hanging loosely from her cheek.

"Who did that to you?" I said, my voice filled with panic.

"You didn't save me." She said, ignoring my question. "You just ran away. You coward!" She shrieked, spitting blood in my face as she did. I backed away from her, terrified of the look on her face. "You left our whole pack to die! After all we did to help you! After all the the things I risked for you!"

"I didn't want to!" I screamed. "I wanted to save you! You told me to run! I'm sorry Mom!"

"You're not sorry, you ungrateful bitch." She hissed at me. "You're running around with your little boyfriend while your family died to save you from the world. You should be sorry. You should act like you love us."

"I do love you!" I shrieked. I knew what was coming. But every time it did, I wasn't ready.

My mother collapsed in a heap of sobs. "You betrayed me!" She cried. "You're the reason they hurt me! My daughter doesn't love me!"

"Mom, please! Stop!" I pleaded. This was the worst part. Seeing my mother angry made me scared. Seeing my mother hurt and wailing made me terrified. She was my strong powerful mother, now a heap of sobs on the ground.

"Look at my hands!" She said holding them up. "Because of you, they're red with blood. Red... Red... Red... Red"

"Red!" I jolted out of bed onto floor with a moan. "Bad dreams?" I look up to see Robin sitting beside me on the floor. I grunted in response.

"How'd you know?" I asked.

"You were screaming "Mom" over and over. I figured the rest out. Wanna talk about it?" She asked.

"Definitely not." I replied.

"Okay then," she said, and I'm glad she dropped it. The last thing I felt like doing was getting a pep talk on how I didn't betray my family, even though I knew I did. My cowardice cost them their life.

"So what's today's plan?" I asked.

"Well the werecat will arrive in about an hour so-"

"Of course!" I said, jumping out of bed. "I forgot! I'll go get ready."

After I had taken a quick shower and was dressed in leggings and a tank top, me and Robin went to find Adam. We walked down several hallways before I heard his booming voice surrounded by several men.

"I want two extra soldiers taking the night shift in the left wing. All of you sleep with your walls down, if anything happens mind link me at once." Adam gave orders to a group of men, who I assumed were his soldiers.

"At once!" I mocked, as my mate turned around to look at me with a smile.

"You dare disrespect the Alpha?" He asked, his eyes filled with tease as he made his way closer to me.

"Are you going to punish me?" I whispered, flicking his nose with my finger causing him to chuckle.

"Well, I might just-" he began before being cut off.

"Uhum," I looked over Adam's shoulder to see one of his men clearing his throat, and I let out a small growl of annoyance at the man disrespecting my mate.

"Down kitty," Adam scolded playfully.

"Sorry, I should introduce myself." I apologized, covering up my growl.

"You're the werecat," one of them said with wide eyes.

"Well yes..." I mumbled, as they began to exchange murmurs. I looked at Adam with a confused look. Did they not know that we were mates?

"Excuse us," Adam said, grabbing my arm lightly and pulling me into a nearby room, closing the door behind him. "Soundproof." He said, allowing me to speak freely.

"They don't know I'm your mate do they?" I said, staring at him with a disappointed look.

"I can't just casually tell them that you are," he explained.

"Why not? It worked on Duke and Cam."

"That's different, they're my closest friends. And wasn't very casual."

"I just don't understand the big deal." I groaned. He fell silent. "What?" I asked.

"What?" He replied.

"You're keeping something from me." I said, and he let out a sigh. He backed onto the desk behind him and leaned against it.

"There are a few complications..." He began.

"Complications?" I asked, urging him to continue.

"It has to do with Sydney," he explained, and I couldn't help the hiss that escaped my lips. "You need to understand one thing, and that is that Sydney is a good person. She did not ask to be brought into a situation like this."

"She is taking what is mine," I growled.

"I love when you act possessive," he said. I raised an eyebrow in response.

"Anyway, continue." I said.

"Sydney was not born into this pack," he started. "But when I brought her here, everyone thought is was because she was my mate. No one asked any questions, and I didn't have to explain myself. The only person I lied to was my father, and I did tell him we were mates. The rest of my family knew we weren't, but did not do anything to stop me. And I think that's why Robin is so fond of you; she knows I wasn't made for Sydney."

His explanation only filled me with more questions. "So why did you take Sydney from her pack?" I asked, trying to ignore the jealousy rumbling at the bottom of my stomach.

"No one knows this Red, you can't tell anyone." He said, his gaze serious.

"I promise," I muttered.

"Sydney's father used to beat her," Adam said, quietly. "And when I went around the packs looking for my mate, and I saw her, I could not just leave her there."

"But why did you have to lie to your father about it? Why couldn't you just tell him the truth?" I asked. At this he got up and moved towards the window, taking deep breaths. "Adam?" I asked, moving towards my mate, and placing my hand on his chest. I looked up to see his green eyes staring down at me. "Tell me." I encouraged.

"My father..." He paused for a second. "He used to beat me too."
