38 ~ Mr. Mate Of The Year

"Did you find her?" I asked Cam, but he shook his head in response.

I had been running around looking for her. I had asked one other pack to help me, the same one who offered to teach her. But I couldn't ask anyone else or they would just try to hunt her down. And I didn't want anyone to hurt her.

I would kill anyone who did.

So you would kill yourself? Nero asked.

I should, shouldn't I? I replied, earning a small huff from the wolf.

"Well keep looking," I mumbled, staring down at a large map laid down on a table.

"Yes, Alpha." Cam replied, knowing that this was not time for jokes or sarcastic replies. "Where shall we search next?"

"Have we tried the west woods?" I asked.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Two nights ago."

"Then it's about time we try again. Send half of the troops there and half north of our pack." I commanded. He nodded and left the room.

I was the reason we were looking for her. I lost my mate. Just because I was a fucking mess. Just because I didn't  know how to control myself. I hurt her. And I needed to fix things, but I didn't know how.

"Adam?" I heard my sister's voice at the door to my office.

"Did you find her?" I asked. She replied with the shake of her head.

"Adam, I think we should stop looking." She whispered.

"What?" I asked. "Stop looking? Stop looking?! Why in the name of the fucking Moon Goddess would we stop looking?!"

"Just hear me out," she said. "You two were made to be together, so don't you think you will find a way? If she wants some space, let her have it. Let her take some time to think things through. I saw the way she would look at you, Adam. She won't be able to stay away forever. Just let destiny take its coarse."

I looked up at her and tensed before giving a small nod.

"If we don't find her by tomorrow, I'll stop searching." I replied.

Then I smelt it. I smelt the sweet scent which made my insides flutter and my mind go wild.

Mate.

I stood up and ran for the door, but my sister's hand stopped me from continuing.

"Give her space." She stated.

"She's here. Robin let me go, I have to get her!" I ordered.

"Adam, give her space. Remember what you did to her. She deserves to get to choose her actions without having you storm in and grab her. If you love her let her go, for if she returns she was always yours. If she doesn't, she never was." She recites the famous quote.

"Well what else should I do?!" I shouted, desperate and annoyed.

"Let me handle it." She offered. I looked her deep in the eye, not sure if she was serious.

"If you lose her-"

"Then she didn't want to be here and you should respect that!" She argued. I gave a small nod after a few seconds of silence.

She was gone in a second, and I was left with my fucked up thoughts.

And the mate of the year award goes to me.

Funny, Nero said.

I don't know why I went back.

But I did.

I sat on the highest branch of a tree facing Adam's pack. I was in Lana's form, so I knew they could smell me.

I also knew that I could outrun anyone who tries to chase or catch me.

But I didn't run. I sat and waited for something to happen. I thought I would see Adam at once. But he never showed.

Had he forgotten about me?

Did he not recognize my scent?

It sounds like you want him to find you and come tracking you down, Lana chuckled. 

I just expected him to, I explained.

Lana picked up her ears as we heard a rustle. We looked around and spotted two familiar figures.

"Here kitty, kitty, kitty." Ryan sang.

"Octavia? We know you're here." Robin called.

"C'mon Red, don't be shy." He said.

Lana let out a teasing growl.

"There she is!" Ryan smiled, waving to me. I jumped down from the tree and shifted.

"Hey," I smiled.

"Don't 'hey' me!" Ryan said. "You disappear leaving the whole pack confused, and you say 'hey' ?!"

"Oh my Goddess Ry, you're doing my head in!" I moaned. "You know what he did, did you expect me to just stick around?"

"What did he do?" He asked.

"Don't act like you don't know," I rolled my eyes.

"He doesn't," Robin spoke. "And I don't know the full story either."

"Of course you don't," I sighed. "Trust Adam to keep it all from you. He cheated on me, well almost anyway. He called Sydney to his room after I went for a run with Caleb, and he was going to sleep with her."

"But he didn't," Robin said.

"But he was going to!" I hissed. "He just makes me so... Frustrated!" I began pacing as I shook my head.

"Red," Ryan began, holding me to stop my pacing. "I know you feel like you hate him, but he's been so down and desperate since you left. He hasn't left his office unless it was to search for you, which he's been doing ten hours a day. Which brings me to my next question; where have you been hiding?"

"I'm not gonna tell you that!" I laughed. "Then where would I hide?"

"I'm just curious!" He said.

"Seriously though, he's been looking everywhere." Robin remarked.

The truth was I thought he would have found me by now. I was surprised he hadn't looked the one place he had found me the first time. I guess he thought it was too obvious.

"Well here I am," I mumbled.

"So you're going back to him?" Ryan asked, looking hopeful.

"No can do, Strawberry Shortcake." I joked, using my old nickname for him.

"Oh, c'mon Red." He moaned.

"I need more time." I said. "Tell him that I came-"

"Trust me, he knows you're here." Robin interrupted. "But he's trying to give you your space."

"Well then tell him I'll be back," I said. "And next time, I'll bring Sydney."

I shifted and ran from the two, leaving them with a confused expression.
