Chapter Twelve
Please tell me why
My car is in the front yard and I'm
Sleeping with my clothes on
And I came in through the window last night
And you're gone
It's me (me), hi (hi), I'm the problem, it's me
At tea (tea) time (time), everybody agrees
I'll stare directly at the sun
but never in the mirror
It must be exhausting always
rooting for the anti-hero
Lit; My own Worst Antihero
"The Milano"
Beth followed on Rocket's heels as he entered the cockpit. They were alone.
She stood with crossed arms as Rocket seated himself in the pilot's seat.
Rocket imputed coordinates in the navigation device and fired the thrusters.
"Alright, let's get boldy to Xandar and collect that bounty," he smiled.
He turned to Beth, "We're actually gonna collect a bounty-"
The raccoon cut himself off mid-sentence.
"Why are you scowling? I haven't done anything stupid since we got back to the ship." He protested.
He turned back to the controls ensuring their trajectory wasn't off leaving the plant's atmosphere.
"Before getting back to the ship, you remember doing anything stupid, like really really stupid even for you?" Beth's tone was slow and deliberate.
There was a pause.
He sighed, "Look I only mouthed off to the gold broad because you looked uncomfortable, alright?"
There was another pause.
"I'm not dead, everything is fine" Rocket looked at her expectantly.
"YOU-"
Beth was furious
"STOLE"
Her fists were clenched at her sides
"-BATTERIES!"
Rocket shushed her, "Keep your voice down, the others will hear ya!"
Beth shook her head.
She angrily whispered to Rocket, "What the hell were you thinking?"
"I'm not some child you need to scold Honey Badger," Rocket was getting angry.
He smirked before continuing.
"-I did it because I wanted to!"
Beth pulled on her face fur. She fought the urge to slap Rocket. Violence against your friends was wrong.
"You wanted to?! You wanted to get us all wanted by those pompous golden morons? They're gonna find out and they are gonna come after us."
Beth let out a long drawn-out sigh.
"-Congratulations!" She spat.
Rocket got up from his seat. He crossed his arms. He too was now scowling.
"-Let me make something very clear Honey Badger, this good guy you seem to think I am, he ain't me."
He narrowed his eyes at her before speaking again, "For your sake and mine stop pretending I'm some hero, I'm not."
An alarm buzzed overhead indicating enemy spacecraft were approaching.
Rocket quickly got back into his seat and scanned the controls and navigation.
