Chapter Twenty-Six

I'm through accepting limits
'Cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love, I guess I've lost
Well, if that's love, it comes
at much too high a cost

"Space"

Beth Carpenter tapped her fingers along to the song that played over the ship's main sound system. Her little badger legs didn't reach the ground so she flicked her foot as if she was tapping it on the floor to the beat. She was strapped in alongside her found family, the other Guardians of the Galaxy.

The genetically enhanced badger had no rhythm so her movements were always about half a beat off. Even when she had been human Beth hadn't had any rhyme.

"Hey ya'll prepare yourself for the rubberband man, You've never heard a sound,"

The music played.

A very animated Peter Quill lip sang the chorus. He used hand gestures and for what was supposed to be a casual road-trip singalong the human man was very theatrical.

"Sing it Drax!" Peter called to one of his companions.

Drax the Destroyer, a bold grey alien man with red tattoos sat slumped in his seat with his head back. The grey man was snoring.

"Like the rubberband man, You're bound to lose control, When the rubberband starts to jam"

In the seat over from Drax, Gamora, a green-skinned woman with dark hair that faded to red lip sang along. Her lip singing performance was not as extravagant as the human man's but she enjoyed herself nonetheless.

Rocket, a genetically enhanced raccoon yawned from his seat.

A prickle of annoyance came over the raccoon. The group had been traveling longer and further than their navigation had first estimated the distress signal was coming from.

Something about this didn't sit right with him.

"Why are we doing this again?" The raccoon asked aloud to the group.

Gamora's answer came with its own prickle of annoyance, "It's a distress signal Rocket, someone could be dying."

Drax stirred awake at Gamora's words.

Beth closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

She was trying to process Rocket's comment.

Every time the badger thought she had finally made peace with their break up he'd do something that made her heart stop.

Sometimes he didn't have to do anything.
