Chapter Seventeen

Oh honey let's ride
Like devils through the canyon
Oh honey let's hide
From the angels in the mountains
Back in the valley they're boarding up their windows tonight
'Cause there's devils in the canyon
The Strike; Devils in the Canyon

"Ego's planet"

The thrusters fired and launched the ship forward through the first jump.

"No boy!" Yondu shouted.

It was a rough ride as they passed through the second and third jump points. The landscapes of alien planets whizzed by.

Yondu turned to Rocket.

"It ain't healthy for a mammalian body to hop more than fifty jumps at a time," he stated.

Rocket rolled his eyes, "I know that!"

"-We're about to do 700!"

Beth cursed as her reality shifted. The colors felt more vibrant as they changed and seemed to seep into one another.

She giggled as the faces of her companions stretched and their eyes grew in size. She heard them screaming but all she could do was laugh.

The badger lay down on the floor of the ship.

This reminded her of the time she did acid in undergrad or maybe the time the new-aged gal from a few dorms down offered her mushroom ramen.

Beth had eaten it gladly not realizing it was that kind of mushroom.

"Guys, I can hear colors!" She grinned.

She felt her insides twist and her brain twirled.

The next couple hundred jumps were a blur.

Pressure began to build in her head.

Beth didn't like this new feeling that had come on suddenly.

She began screaming along with the others.

The badger got to her feet.

The ship continued on its course through galaxies of various colors, shapes, and sizes.

One of the jumps passed over what Beth could have sworn was a human man in a spacesuit talking to a group of hairless aliens.

They pinballed their way through more jump points.

To Beth, it started to feel like her very being was coming undone.

As she contemplated her life choices that had led to this very moment the spaceship stopped without warning.

Rocket and Yondu toppled forward out of their seats. Beth fell back onto the floor. Groot vomited a creamy green substance.

"What the hell you doin' boy?" Yondu shouted angrily at Rocket.

The raccoon stood bent over trying to compose himself.

"I can tell by how you talked about him this Ego is bad news, we're here to save Quill!" Rocket explained.

Yondu stood up and shook his head at Rocket, "For what? For honor? For love?"

Rocket scowled, "No! I don't care about those things!"

Beth felt her insides deflate and it wasn't because of the terrible trip they had all just survived.

She got to her feet and stood next to Kraglin. The badger crossed her arms and stared down at her feet.
