Chapter Twenty-One

The odds are that we will probably be alright
Odds are we gonna be alright,
odds are we gonna be alright tonight
The odds are that we will probably be alright
Odds are we gonna be alright, odds are we gonna be alright for another night

"The Benatar"

It took more time than Rocket cared to admit but eventually, the hole in the floor was patched, the walls were no longer on fire, and the water had been rerouted away from the storage room.

Peter and Gamora returned from their outing.

The green woman scowled at the human.

"We're the Guardians of the Galaxy!" She told Peter.

He smiled at her, "Right but we do both good and bad things, and you know, bad things tend to pay better."

Gamora groaned.

"It's an easy million units," Peter countered.

Rocket was intrigued, "Did you say a million units?"

"I'm not sure if that's a lot. I know a million is a large number but there was no currency on Ego's planet." Mantis smiled.

"Oh it's a lot, we'd be sitting pretty for a while," Peter continued smiling.

Drax raised an eyebrow, "I do not wish to sit a while or be pretty."

"-What's the catch, Pete?" Beth asked, a bit skeptical.

Peter shook his head at her, "It's a simple retrieval mission-"

Gamora interrupted Peter, "-For the Solaris group!"

It was Rocket's turn to look skeptical, "The interstellar crime family? You must be outta your freakin' mind."

Beth blinked, she knew the name and notorious group.

"You meet with Cal?" The badger asked Peter.

Peter nodded "Actually, yea we did."

She smirked at the human, "What did he look like?"

He shrugged, "You know intimidating blue alien mob boss, scars, missing a couple of fingers, built like a brick wall-"

"I have never seen an alien race that looks like a wall!" Drax countered.

Rocket sighed, "It's an exaggeration, you moron."

Beth laughed.

Peter scoffed at the badger.

"Honey Badger, what is the deal?"

She composed herself, "That wasn't Cal, that was Mel. There isn't a soul alive who's seen the real Cal and lived."

The human frowned, "And why would you know that?"

The badger frowned back, "I may have done an odd job or two for the Solaris group after I-"

She paused.

"-resigned from my previous employer."

The group looked at the badger with surprise across their faces.

"What? It's hard to find employment as a-"

Beth gestured to herself, "I did what I had to to survive."

"You saying Quill's being sent in a wild goose chase?" Rocket raised an eyebrow.

She shook her head, "No, nothing like that. If the Solaris group made a deal for a million units they're good for it."
