Several emotions filled me as I walked the streets of Manhatten, New York. The first was excitement, for it was my first time in the human realm. Of course, my studies allowed me information as to how humans of the decade interacted and dressed, resulting in my attire. The dress was a brilliant blood red that had puffy, black lace sleeves and a ruffled skirt. With a tight bodice and boat neckline, the dress showed off my fine features. It was an obvious head-turner, and I was confused if I should be glad or worried that a unfamiliar young lady like me should make such first impression. This result in my second emotion; fear.

I feared someone would know of my true nature, or that I would attract too much attention. After all, I wasn't staying for long. My trip to the realm was a privilege and I was sure to make use of it.

My stroll was interrupted by a boy, somewhere around the age of 13 human years. His face was covered in filth along with his long coat and brown slacks. The coat was far to big for the boy, and was obviously meant to be worn by a bulkier sir. The paper the boy suddenly held to my face distracted me from his unfitting apparel.

"Pardon me, mademoiselle but would you be kind enough to purchase a paper? I haven't a penny to spare for fire wood...."

I looked at the date on the paper; November 8th, 1841. The columns on the paper confuse me, of course. Heaven knows that I ought to keep up to date with the human realm.

A clearing of a throat caused me to peer through my lashes. The boy was looking at me expectantly, his brown eyes wide and a pout on his pale lips. I let out a sigh that would appear polite enough for a lady before searching in my clutch for my money.

"Oh, honestly. I appear to be weak for the needy, heavens help me," I said before looking up at the boy expectantly. "How much, dear?"

"Six pennies, Madame!" The boy grinned at me, showing his crooked teeth. I shook my head slightly before handing over the coins.

"Lord help me, if I cannot pay for some new clothing...."

"Oh, I'm positive you'll be able to afford something, mademoiselle! Good day, miss! The money is much appreciated!" With that, the boy turned on his heel and started off down the stone pavement. Before he disappeared behind a corner of a building, he turned to me once again and shouted, "And may God bless you!"

I sighed under my breath. "I cannot help but believe that the blessing wishes upon me will take awhile to happen...."

Finally, I reached my stop; the dress boutique. The windows shined in the pale morning light, showing my reflection in the mirror. I hardly recognized myself. My high cheek bones were even more defined after I pinched them that morning, and my dark hair was in a complicated design of intertwined curls. A gray bonnet lied over my curls, featuring a few small, lovely read flowers on the side. I've never looked so... beautiful. I spent most of my time in hell trying to look ugly to blend in.

With a smile that showed no teeth, I pulled open the wooden door to the shop. I was greeted with a strong floral aroma that made me light headed and giddy. As I looked around the boutique, I took in the many materials hanging from the walls and few dresses on display. Besides the dresses were accessories that varied from diamond rings to bonnets to umbrellas to gloves. My boots clicked on the wooden floor as I walked further inside the textile wonderland.
