Eunjin and Ricky stared deep into each others' gaze. Eunjin was wondering if she had fallen asleep driving there and if that's what this was.
"You live here?" was all Eunjin managed to say in response to his outburst.
"Yes" he told her. "What are you doing here?"
"My parents told me to meet here," she explained to him, hating being in his presence. "Do you know where they are?"
Ricky sighed. "Yes, they're in the dining room come on."
If this interaction had occurred on campus Ricky would've completely ignored Eunjin. But his and her parents were nearby and he didn't want to look bad.
He knew that their guests' family name was Jung but didn't think that their daughter would be Jung Eunjin. The one person he hated in his life.
"Oh there she is!" Mrs. Jung pointed out her daughter to Mrs. Shen. "Introduce yourself to Mrs. Shen, Eunjin-ah."
Ricky watched Eunjin bow to his mother with a smile on her face. He couldn't believe that in the previous moment Eunjin was glaring at him and now she's putting on a smile in front of his mom.
Eunjin was told to sit in the empty seat next to her brother. Which also happened to be next to Ricky. The thought of being next to him during the whole dinner made Eunjin wanna cry. But no complaints left her mouth since other people were there.
"Have you two met before?" Mrs. Shen asked Eunjin and Ricky.
Both of them nodded, not looking over at the other person. The need to avoid eye contact was mutual.
"We've been competitors for the top place in school since junior year," Ricky explained to his mom. "So yes, we know each other."
"Oh that's great that they've already met!" Mrs. Jung exclaimed. "It makes it easier for everyone."
Neither Ricky nor Eunjin knew what Mrs. Jung was talking about. Was she just hoping that them knowing each other would bring less tension in the dining room? Because it did quite the opposite.
"Your son must be smart then, if him and Eunjin are fighting for the top spot," Mr. Jung said to Mrs. Shen. "How impressive."
Eunjin wanted to rip her ears off. Why was everyone always praising Ricky? He wasn't even that great. Like sure he had the looks and money but if someone only cared about that then they're a horrible person. She couldn't believe that even her own parents were becoming head over heels for Ricky. They shouldn't even be that surprised to hearing about grades that good. She always got those scores or better.
"I think we should tell them once the food is served," Mrs. Shen told Mr. and Mrs. Jung. The couple nodded in agreement.
That sentence even got Jung Eunsung's attention. Him and the two enemies wanted to know what their parents were referring to.
Eunjin didn't expect it to be much. She thought that they would just announce that their two companies were rebranding together or releasing a new product line in collaboration with the other.
Both Eunjin and Ricky impatiently waited for the food to be served. The anticipation was killing them. They both knew that it wasn't going to be anything really big but the way Mrs. Shen made it sound made they start to think otherwise.
Eunjin avoided having to talk to Ricky. Instead she conversed with her younger brother who she was actually pleased to see. She would never be happy to see Shen Ricky.
Finally, Mrs. Shen announced that the food was read and went back to the kitchen to grab servings for everyone. Both Ricky and Eunjin decided to go with her to help. Seeing the other one have the same idea as them disgusted them. Why were their minds so alike?
