THE GHOST HUNTERS

After what seems like an eternity, but is actually only about ten minutes later, the doorbell rings.

Suddenly the sounds of things flying around the living room stop, as if the doorbell has scared the ghost away.

I cautiously poke my head out of the closet, prepared to see that horrible ghostly face staring back at me with that horrible smile you often see in horror films.

But as soon as my eyes turn to the living room, I find it empty again, just like the time with the wall.

The only difference from when I was hiding is that now there are thousands of things scattered all over the living room floor. There are so many different things on the floor that I cannot identify most of them.

I climb out of the closet as quickly as I can and run to the front door. Once I reach the door, I try to open it, failing miserably though, as the door does not budge. It is locked, even though I did not lock it when I came in, and the keys are in my bag, which is upstairs in my bedroom.

'But then how can the door be locked? I know for a fact that I did not lock it', I think. It must have something to do with the ghost. She must have locked it because she does not want me to come out and clearly does not want anyone to come in either.

"I can't get the door open. It won't budge and I didn't lock it," I say to the person behind the door, hoping it is someone the guy on the phone sent and not some stranger who wants something else entirely.

To my relief, the person on the other side of the door does not sound confused at all.

"Okay, then try the window on your left," a deep voice says. It is definitely a man's voice.

I do as the voice tells me and walk over to the window and try to open it. Nothing happens.

The man outside has not moved away from the door and I cannot see him from where I am standing.

"Just as I had expected," the voice says.

"Okay, stay away from the door, we are coming in," the voice says after a short pause.

Once again, I remain rooted to the spot by the window, listening to what the voice is telling me.

There is a loud thud as someone slams into the door with full force, followed two seconds later by another thud and then an even louder one.

The door crashes to the ground, taking two people down with it. Both of them quickly recover and get up, turning to face me.

One of them is quite tall, with short blonde hair and wearing a black suit. The other is a little shorter, with black hair, is wearing the same suit as the other man and sunglasses. He reminds me a little of the agents in Men in Black. I saw that film a couple of days ago, and they had very similar suits on, and sometimes they wear sunglasses as well.

Now the man takes off his sunglasses and looks straight at me. "Sorry about your door, miss," he says apologetically. It is the man who spoke to me through the door outside. I recognise his deep, but kind and friendly voice.

I just smile, not quite sure what to say. The man notices my uncomfortable look and speaks again. "I'm so sorry, how rude of us to just barge in here and to not even introduce ourselves. My name is Cedric Smith, and this is my brother Jay Smith." Jay smiles warmly at me.

"My name is Riley Rivers," I reply, smiling back at them both, feeling a little safer, now that these men are with me in this horrible house.

"Right then, Ms Rivers, time to get rid of this ghost of yours," Jay says and starts walking towards the basement.

"Where are you going?" I ask worriedly, as I have no intention of going anywhere near the basement with a ghost haunting the place.

I mean, has he never seen a horror film before?

I look at them both worriedly, but Jay just smiles warmly at me again. "It's okay. You can stay up here and wait for us to come back if you'd prefer that."

With that, the two men walk out, leaving me standing alone in the middle of the living room, and make their way to the door that leads to the basement. After opening it carefully, they step inside.

'There's no way they're leaving me up here alone,' I think, quickly picking up the pace to catch up with them before they disappear into the basement.

"Oh, I see. You decided to come after all then ey," Cedric laughs.

"Yeah, well, you are not going to leave me all alone in that bloody living room. There were all sorts of things flying around a few minutes before you arrived. Besides, I wouldn't know what to do while I am waiting for you two to come back again," I reply, sounding dead serious.

But that only causes them to burst out laughing.

'What do they think is so funny about that?' But instead of asking them, I decide to shrug it off. I am far too shocked by the whole situation in my house to start having a conversation with two strangers about what, according to them, is so humorous right now.

Slowly they make their way forward, me following closely.
