A Little Grey

Luckily for me, Seren's cold stare coupled with her homicidal driving style didn't kill me before we could get back to the house that we all shared with one another. I couldn't wait to make my escape and scurry off to my room like a mouse who had just heard the mouse trap meant for them accidentally shut on the family broom. A narrow escape, rare and difficult but not impossible. I grabbed the drinks i had purchased for everyone out of the seat beside me and kept my eyes glued to the stones that lead up to our front porch. "Which one of us has their keys in a convenient place that wont jeopardize the drinks or Lil's life?" Artemis chuckled. I growled under my breath as I began to shuffle through my pockets with my only available hand. "She said WITHOUT jeopardizing the only things that will keep me from gutting you like a fish, shitass." Seren scolded, breathing fire through her perfect little teeth. "Now, now honey we can't make the neighbors aware of our dastardly deeds, they already know were bisexual, if they find out we hide the bodies under the house we will truly never be invited to the community cook outs." Artemis twirled a piece of Seren's wild green hair between her fingers. "Yeah Seren, you can't kill me right here in front of God and everyone, what will the church think?" I nervously chimed in with a just as frightened giggle. "Can everyone just shut up and find the keys? I want my tea already!" Seren pushed past us both and stomped up the stairs. Reaching down briefly, Seren was able to locate the fake rock we had placed behind a flower pot on the porch to grab our spare key. After the front door had been opened, I knew it was my time to flee. I hurried to the island in the middle of our kitchen to drop off the drinks for the others before attempting my escape. "I don't THINK SO." Seren's voice echoed through our kitchen and began to ring in my ears as i made it through the living room and stopped in my tracks at the beginning of the hallway that lead to my back bedroom.

"What is it my darling?" I smiled and placed my hands behind my back as i scooted backward toward Seren using my socks and our wooden floor as my mode of transportation. Seren grabbed me by my arm and flung me to the couch. I bounced and finally landed safely with my butt on the couch and my feet flat on the floor, thank god for sleeper sofas. "Just where do you think you are going MISSY." Seren bent over in front of me and put herself at eye level with me. I looked down at the floor and began to brush my right foot against the fluffy rug we had on the floor in front of the couch. "I-I was just going to go to my room and take a nap. I had a long day too, ya know?" I refused to look at her. I knew Seren had every reason to be angry with me, but i didn't have a very good defense for my actions.

Who wants to fight that losing battle? "Oh no you aren't! You are going to sit here and tell me what happened when you went against the advice that you specifically asked me for. Hmm? Go on. Spill it." Seren sat down on the floor in front of me and crossed her legs in front of her. I always loved her sense of style. No matter what the weather was like, no matter the occasion, she always looked like some sort of woodland creature or the manager of a metal band. There really was no in between. Today's ensemble? a beautiful white dress, baby doll cut at the top, flowy sleeves. A belt she found online that looks like she has vines wrapped around her waist and chest. Headphones that make her look like she has elf ears. If nothing else i had to hand it to her, she was perfection. My concentration on Seren and her outfit broke as Artemis approached us giggling. "We get drinks and a show before dinner? It has to be a special occasion." Artemis plopped down beside Seren and handed each of us our drinks from the knock off Starbucks in the library. I got Seren her favorite, ofcourse, a chai tea latte with oat milk. Artemis always gets the same thing in case Seren wants a sip of hers. Like i said, aren't they disgusting? Anyway, I took a deep breath and lifted my head slightly to look at them both. Seren looked at me like she could level me with her eyes and Artemis sipped her drink with a giddy smile plastered on her face in between gulps.

"I went to the library to meet up with him before I was supposed to meet with you, and he didn't-"

"He didn't show up did he? DID HE? I told you he was a lowlife piece of trash." Seren began to spit fire again and clutch onto the skirt portion of her dress.

"I just hope something came up. Maybe I just missed him or something."

"Lil, you didn't miss him. What exactly did he say when he mentioned meeting up with you?"

"He told me to look for a guy with his hair fixed with gel, wearing jeans and a dark grey sweater."

"Lil, did you forget to tell him that you are COLORBLIND?"

"I'm not colorblind Seren, we have been over this I am Achromatic."

"Whatever! You literally cannot tell whether or not he is wearing dark grey because everything is grey to you! He could have been sitting right there waiting for you too."

"That's not true I know that your hair is green. And your vines are green." I placed my finger underneath the belt made of vines that Seren had around her waist.

"Lil, you know what Dr. Priestley said."

"I don't care about what Dr. Priestley said."

"Of course you don't because it isn't what you want to hear."

"It can't be right Seren."

"It is Lil, you can only see colors on people that you share a bond with and that you are close to. Only people who are meant to be in your life are going to have color to them eventually. No-one else in your life ever will. You are going to have to accept that eventually."

"It is the dumbest thing I have ever HEARD." I stood up and stomped off to my room.

"You have to deal with it at some point Lil, The others never had color to them. There's no shame in that we all date people or befriend people we shouldn't."

"What about Artemis?" I shouted, clinching my empty cup in my hand.

"What about her?"

"I have never been able to see her colors. Not once. And she has been around for two years now. She is obviously meant to be around me, and around us. We live together and you two are made for each other for God's sake."

"I never said I had all of the answers Lil. I am just telling you that Nash made a lot of sense when he explained it to us. I know it can be upsetting, but you will have to deal with it eventually." I put my head down and looked back down at the floor.

"Maybe he was there and it just wasn't right. I am hopeless."

"You just have to tell these people your condition before randomly meeting them, that's all. You know it takes longer than that for the colors to show. It was all just a misunderstanding. Just try again when you're ready. AFTER you explain to him what's going on with you." Seren brushed my hair out of my face and looked at me warmly. At least if I have suffer with almost every guy i form a connection with having no color, you'd think when she gets on my nerves she could at least turn a little grey.
