In a jiffy, we arrived at this modern house like the ones which have a lot of windows. It was pretty crazy. Drinks were in plenty and everyone was having a good time as some funky dance music was playing from the DJ booth.
"Come on, let's dance!" Cora said as she dragged me to the multicolored dance floor.
Cora is an extremely good dancer. She swayed her hips to the beat in such an elegant manner. She is also light on her feet making her an excellent tango dancer. After dancing for a while, I got thirsty and went to the punch table for some cocktails for me and Cora. What I saw shook me to my roots.
There he was. Adam was lip-locked with some lady. I moved closer and saw that it was Ellie! Of all people! Bubbly and positive Ellie! I couldn't believe my eyes. I dropped my glass in shock and they looked up. He looked at me with a look of deep regret. But I looked away and ran. I went to Cora and grabbed her and dragged her to the car. I didn't explain anything to Cora and immediately drove off fighting back tears. When I looked in the side mirror, I saw Adam standing on the curb, looking sadly as I drove away.
The one I loved, drifting away from me just like before.
That night, I didn't talk to anyone and just cried my eyes out on some ice cream. Adam tried to text me but I switched off my phone. The last person I would like to talk to is that cheating bastard!
The thoughts came rushing back, a familiar face giving me a kiss on the cheek and waving goodbye as they entered the car taking them to their new home.
The next morning, I had a terrible headache. I called my boss and said I couldn't make it. I was to travel to the Azov Kingdom the next day and I was still raging at Adam. How could he? I finally switched my phone on just to find a bunch of texts and voicemails from Adam. I just rolled my eyes and wore some decent clothes and toddled to the nearest chemist for some painkillers and passed by a restaurant and got some chicken soup. Mmmmm... chicken soup. Delicious!
When I got to my apartment door, I found Adam leaning on the wall, looking down at his phone.
"What are doing here?'' I ask, still angry.
"I'm here to explain what happened yesterday.''
"There's nothing to explain. I saw what I saw and in fact, this relationship is over!'' I shouted, banging the door in his face.
"Ugh!'' I said in disgust.
I have to focus. For starters, I need to call Andres and tell him to replace Adam with someone else. Otherwise, I'm going to fail the mission.
"Yes?" said Andres's assistant, after the phone rang for one good minute.
"May I speak to Andres concerning business matters?''
"Sorry, he just went out. Is there a message I could leave for him, Ms. Meghan?" she asked.
"Just kindly tell him to call me back as soon as possible," I answered as I sighed. I cut the phone call.
As I was eating my chicken soup, Cora called.
"Hey, are you alright? You never explained what happened," she asked.
"I broke up with Adam because I saw him kissing Ellie at the party," I said.
"WHAT!?!? He's such a jerk. But are you fine?"
"I guess. I'm going to talk to Andres to switch Adam with someone else."
"Ok, do you have anyone in mind?"
"Not really. Wait, what about Austin?"
"The janitor?" she asks, surprised.
"Not that Austin," I said, chuckling. "Austin from communications."
"Hmmm.... interesting choice. Any reasons?" she asks.
"He's.... experienced and would be perfect for the job," I said.
"Ok then. Any other reasons?"
"I know what you're thinking and it's not that," I said, smiling.
"Ok, ok, just making sure," she said, giggling.
"Talk to you later, Andres is calling me."
"Ok, bye."
"Bye."
I cut the call and picked up Andres' call.
"Hi, Andres."
"What do you need? It sounded urgent," he asked.
"I need to change my partner for the Azov mission."
"Why? Adam is the perfect man for the job."
"We broke up and don't feel comfortable working with him right now."
"But where are we supposed to get a replacement a day before the trip?" he asked, clearly perturbed.
"I have the perfect guy for the job, how about Austin Ames from communications?" I asked, hoping to get a positive answer.
"Ok, let me call him to see if he'll agree, please hold"
"Sure!" I said. I waited anxiously for three minutes.
"Ok. Thank you." I heard Andres say.
"So?" I asked.
"He has agreed, much to my surprise. He was hesitant at first but once I told him who was requesting, he agreed at once."
I kept that last comment in mind.
"I'll schedule a meeting later today at about three o'clock if that's fine for you and Mr. Ames. See you then."
"Thank you Andres for understanding."
"It's fine. I get the struggles." He said as he cut the phone call.
This is more than struggles, I said to myself.
