Chapter 25
Night Out
I got an answer from Triton that night when he called me. From the hospital, he came back to school to attend his last class, then went home to prepare for his work. I could tell from his voice that he was already worn out and sleepy.
"Wayne's fine. Her test results came out and the doctor said that she consumed an expired hotdog. Wait, paano mo nga pala nalaman ang nangyari?"
"Uh, nakasalubong kasi namin si Trisha kanina. Nabanggit niya na na-ospital si Wayne..." I closed the book and relinquished the duvet to get up.
"Like, she randomly said that to you?" feeling ko nakataas ang kilay niya ngayon dahil sa kalituhan.
I put my bunny slippers on and headed to the balcony to breathe in some air. "She said that Wayne passed out after eating the kimchi fried rice. How could it be possible? I may not be a great cook, but I definitely won't serve poisoned food."
"I'm sorry, Isla, but there's been a misunderstanding..." He sighed and clicked his tongue. "I never gave that fried rice to Wayne. Ibinilin ko kay Jett kasi kinailangan kong mag pa-photocopy. Ito namang si Jett, pumunta sa Connon Hall para makipag-meeting kina Wayne. I don't know what exactly happened, but she ended up eating the fried rice and passed out."
It was like an assurance, so I wouldn't have to worry anymore.
"Then after doing my task, I found out about it and felt guilty so I went to the hospital with Wayne. I felt like I was responsible for what happened kahit na alam kong walang lason 'yung pagkain. I hope you didn't believe Trisha. And I'm sorry for the trouble, Isla. I just want to clear the air... Niluto mo 'yon para sa 'kin kaya bakit ko ipapakain sa iba?"
I smiled with relief. "Don't worry, may tiwala naman ako sa niluto ko. I'm just glad that she's okay now. I don't want to start anything with anybody..."
"But it doesn't mean that she could accuse you. I'll talk to Trisha and Wayne. I just didn't have the time earlier 'cause I had to attend my class."
Tumango ako. "Oh, right! May work ka pa 'di ba? Nag-dinner ka na ba?"
"Nagluto ako kanina. Ikaw, kumain ka na? Pupunta na ako sa car wash ngayon. Again, I'm sorry for that. You can end the call now, Isla," pareho kaming natahimik kasi hindi ko magawang pindutin ang end button.
"Kumain na rin ako." I heaved a sigh. "It's not your fault, Triton. Hindi mo kailangang mag-sorry sa 'kin..."
"Still, I have to apologize. Ayokong ma-disappoint ka sa 'kin," he chuckled and sighed as well.
"Hindi naman. I understand. And, uh, you have to go now. Ingat ka. See you at school, Triton!"
"I hope to see you soon, Isla," aniya dahil busy nga pala siya.
I ended the call, turning my body to look at the picturesque buildings of Makati. I hugged my phone and wondered what time he would come home. I also wondered if he could sleep properly at night. Or, he wouldn't go to bed until he finished his plates and homework?
I couldn't help but feel proud of him. I know all of his hard work will pay off and he'll have a good life...
The next day, we didn't see each other again. The couple near my car laughed at my reaction. I laughed as well because it was really funny.
