Authors Note: I hope it makes sense that while Marlene is in Narcissa's POV part, she has her own POV BEFORE they see each other even if it is written after. If it doesn't make sense I can always come back and move some stuff around however it would include repeating a person's POV later in the chapter which I've been trying to avoid.

Also, if the chapter title is literal or metaphorical you'll have to read to find out.

"Father, can I ask you something?" She asked, standing by the door of his study, "It's... not something I can ask Mother. I think she'd lie."

Cygnus nodded, setting his quill down, "Your mother isn't exactly one to lie unless necessary, but... go ahead." He nodded to the chair across him.

Narcissa walked over, sitting down, picking at the loose threads on her dress, anxious about the response, "I went to visit Evan and Uncle Theodore and Aunt Vinda."

"That's not a question."

"I'm building exposition."

He chuckled, "Okay, okay. Go on."

"Mother doesn't really talk with them or anything." She pointed out, "That actually brings out another question."

"If it's because she married into the Black family?"

"She gave up her name and by extension her place in the Rosier family, no?"

Cygnus nodded, "Most of the time, women in our society give up any and all connections to their families for their husbands."

Narcissa nodded, "I'm expected to do the same when I marry Lucius aren't I?" She whispered.

"I hope you don't, but yes."

"To my original question, when Mother gave up that side of her life, did she also... was she... was she one of them? Is she one? A vampire?"

Cygnus sat back in his chair, studying Narcissa intently, "This isn't a topic we take lightly, dear." I see where this question comes from, given that you visited the Rosiers, I will be having a talk with your Uncle about it."

"It's just that she is a born Rosier, even if she married into the Blacks. Evan mentioned that my mother and Uncle Theodore, her brother, Evan's father, went on... hunting trips when they were much younger." She explained, "Not only that, some things would start making more sense. We're much stricter than other pureblood families in society and she doesn't enjoy talking about her life prior to joining the Black family."

"The Rosiers have always strongly believed in embracing their vampiric heritage. They believed it granted them certain advantages and powers." Cygnus explained, "I agree with their belief to an extent. It holds great power. If it can be controlled. Your mother was a vampire. Is. She has hidden that part of her life away though, Narcissa, and you are not to disturb her by bringing it up to her. She had an incident when she was pregnant with Bellatrix and she decided it was time to give it up. People's beliefs on vampires were also changing at that time. We had a doctor come to our home and... the rest is history."

"What does that mean? What did the doctor do?" Narcissa asked, desperate to understand further.

Cygnus sighed, "There are... certain practices that can suppress or mitigate vampiric traits, at least to some degree. It's a complicated process involving potions, spells, and lifestyle changes. She also had them take the fangs from her mouth. Your mother made a choice for herself and for our family."
