you and (humbug)alex fall asleep in the back of the car on a trip.

-potion approaching - arctic monkeys-

the monkeys were to record their new album with josh homme, of queens of the stone age. but the studio was out in the desert, which meant a long road trip. when alex first looked at joshs texts he read desert as dessert and momentarily believed that they would discuss the new album over a banana split or a chocolate brownie.

we'd already been in this rental van for over 4 hours. poor matthew was driving with jamie on his side. luckily, there was enough of us so we all had a seat between us. behind the boys at the front was kelly and nick, then breana and katie, then me and alex at the back. (i know breana and matt didnt meet til like 2011 but just go with it)

as the vehicle was so large, matt was very paranoid and had consistent road rage which is always a laugh. "oh just because i'm driving a massive, slow van this prick thinks he can overtake me!" he shouted.

after that i blocked out the road rage at the front of the van. i was more focused on the fact that it felt like we were on mars, it was boiling. the seats were hot and the aircon in the car was broken but we rolled the windows down to save ourselves.

alex was sat there in a grey vest and blue jeans. his toned biceps were on display and i tried my hardest not to stare. we'd only been dating for a few months. in front of him, he held a small dark red notebook full with song lyrics.

"whatcha writing al?" i asked him, letting go of the seatbelt i was fiddling with.
"i'm not sure really, i just wanna write a few more lyrics before we meet with josh. i don't want him to think i'm relying on him for lyrics because i'm not." he said, mindlessly scribbling out words and writing more.

"i am sure he knows how good of a songwriter you are. as do i." i reassured him. "what have you got so far?" i then asked. he had already shown me crying lightning and my propeller and they were amazing. i couldn't wait to hear what the end result sounded like.

"cmere, i'll show you love." he gestured for me to move into the middle seat. i moved up and he pulled his raybans from his eyes and placed them in his lap. he handed the notebook to me, telling me about which pages were what songs and what some bits meant.

i listened attentively, my head rested on his shoulder. "i'm speechless al. you're a fucking poet not a songwriter." i said to him. he had a genuine smile on his face and placed his arm round to my shoulder and squeezing it, "thanks y/n."

"fuck offff!!!" matt shouted after the loudest car horn i had ever heard. i threw my head back in frustration at his road rage as did almost everyone else.

alex then moved his arm back so he could reach down to grab his bag. he got out a pair of wired earphones. "wanna share these?" he asked, handing me one.

"a lifesaver." i relaxed placing one in my ear and watched al do the same then pick up his ipod. once again i leant my head on his shoulder as heroes by david bowie began playing. i picked up the sunglasses from his lap and placed them on my eyes. alex brought his arm round to my shoulder again. we sat there comfortably to the sounds of david bowie, the strokes and the beatles.

i didn't even notice that me and alex had fallen asleep until we woke up to bumpy roads. alex had fallen asleep after me, his head rested ontop of mine. as soon as the roads became bumpy, alex head awkwardly knocked into mine, waking us both up. his hand held onto my shoulder and my hand rested on his knee.

alexs head was now upright but i kept mine on his shoulder for a few minutes. "we are definitely in the desert." he stated, rubbing his hand up and down my shoulder. i then looked up to see an endless landscape of sand.

"it's already hot enough with you here, let alone this whole desert." i mumbled before chuckling. "whats that?" alex said, bringing me closer. "nothing." i giggled as he brought his lips to mine briefly.

the title is so long but i wanted to include as much of the lyric from potion approaching.

then we fell asleep in the car
until the bumps woke me up in your grip and the tide took me to your mouth
and then swept me back down to your palms
