Chapter 24: What A Fall

[Y/n's PoV]

I went back to the camp as Aether prepares a stew for us four to eat during the night.

Ei was sitting near the campfire as she seems to be deep in thoughts. I glanced over at her from time to time and noticed that she was staying silent this whole time.

When Aether had finished preparing the stew, Paimon began eating a raw, fresh apple in the camp.

"*Chewing* What's up with you two?" Paimon's tone sounded a bit like she was trying to tease me and Ei on purpose.

"It is nothing to worry yourself about, Paimon." She simply said as though she seems to be trying to avoid the conversation, but it would be too rude to ignore Paimon's questions entirely.

I looked over at Ei, her expression was still in deep thoughts. She has not look at me since we first set up the camp this evening, nor has she said anything to me- it was as if we're complete strangers again.

Ei and Aether awkwardly continued eating their stew while me and Paimon watch her.

"...."

I just closed my eyes before standing up since staying here will be of no use.

"Wait- where are you going?" Paimon asked me with curious eyes.

"You three should rest. I'll watch the whole night in case there are some hindrances along the way."

After saying that, Ei finally looks toward my direction with curiosity as well.

"Oh, are you heading elsewhere? I suppose it is time for us to rest, but you need it just as much as the rest of us, don't you?" She asked me this kind of random question with her calm demeanour but the concern in her tone can't be hidden.

"There's no need for it. My eyes won't be affected that much if I didn't rest nor sleep."

I transformed to my normal Thunderbird state and landed on a strong tree branch.

She looked at me up in the tree, and then looks away. Meanwhile, Aether finished eating his stew, and looks over towards me as well.

"If Y/n volunteered to be on night watch, then we should get some rest."

Later at midnight while all three of them fell asleep and no danger seems to risen, I decided to went back towards the waterfall.

I flew in the middle of the night in silent and peacefully. At this time of hour, nobody was awake to bother me. The waterfall sounded like some sort of peaceful music to my ears, the air was cool and fresh; the night was starry and bright. I felt like I was the apex predator here- the master of this environment and its creatures.

At a time like this... I could say I'm currently having my ideal moment since there was nothing else for me to worry about right now.

I transformed back to my human body and stretched out before slowly undressing myself.

I do wonder... What did that kiss at the waterfall really mean to her? Moreover, how did she feel about the moment of weakness she had earlier?
