"Yeah, but go quick, I'm on the run here."

Summer of 1959

I walked through the park. It was my first time alone in the park.

I have been living with the Curtis' for a year and it has been pretty wild. Soda and I love causing chaos, but Darry always gets mad at us. He's fourteen now, and he usually watches the three of us when my mom and the Curtis parents aren't home, which isn't often.

Johnny and Ponyboy really hit it off and they are best friends now. Johnny is in our little gang now. I think we are a gang now. At least, it sounds cooler.

Soda, Johnny, and I are all ten now. It turns out, Johnny is our age. Although he was born several months later, he's still half a year younger than us. He's really shy and his parents are bad people. They hurt him, and the sad thing is that he's used to it. He's a really strong kid, he's unphased by it now.

Mrs. Curtis tried reporting it to the cops, but they didn't listen, so she allows Johnny to stay whenever he needs. Although he rarely does, I don't know why.

Steve is eleven now. He still hates Ponyboy, but Ponyboy can keep up with the rest of us real good now, especially with Johnny around. He's a fast kid.

I still don't know why Steve hated Ponyboy. I asked him multiple times, but he never gave me a straight up answer. I wish those two got along, but I guess some people don't click.

Keith, or I should say Two-bit, is twelve. That's his new nickname, apparently because he's funny. I mean, he is, but yeah. We all grew out of Mickey Mouse except him.

While I was walking through the park, I saw a kid who looked around my age, maybe older. He looked to be running for his life. I don't know why. He ran right up to me.

"Hey kid," I picked up on his New York accent immediately, "Know any good hiding places?" He asked.

"Why?" I asked.

"I'll tell ya on the way, just tell me." He practically begged.

"There's a vacant lot a few streets down there, I can show ya, if ya want." I said.

"Yeah, but go quick, I'm on the run here." I nodded, not asking more questions about the situation. I ran ahead, him right behind me.

We didn't talk until we made it to the lot. We were crouching down behind an old mattress somebody left here.

"So, what's your name, kid?" He asked me.

"I'm Elle, yours?" I responded.

"The one and only Dallas Winston." He said.

"That New York kid I've been hearing about?" I asked, in disbelief I just helped a JD.

"Yeah, hope ya don't hate me or anythin'." He said.

"Oh don't worry." Then I had an idea, "Wanna meet my friends?" I asked.

"Sure." He shrugged.

"Let's go."
