"Do I have to go?"
The first thought that came to my mind when we walked back home was that it was about my father. Was this about him? Is he gone?
Johnny must've seen the worry on my face.
"It's probably nothin', man, don't worry." He said. I just nodded, not really wanting to say anything.
We made it the house. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis were talking to some old guy in the kitchen. Okay, maybe he's not that old. He had a clipboard and pen in his hand. He looked to be in his forties or fifties. He had glasses, no beard or mustache.
"Uh, I'm here." I said quietly. I walked over and sat down next to Mrs. Curtis. The guy looked at her, as if waiting for her to explain to me what was going on.
"Honey, the state has some stuff to figure out, alright? Don't worry though, all they need is confirmation from your dad that you're staying here." She explained.
"Do I have to go?" I asked urgently.
"No, but this gentleman wants to ask you some questions before he leaves, alright?" I nodded, so Mr. and Mrs. Curtis left the room. Johnny gave me a quick smile before leaving the house again.
"So, are you happy here?" The guy asked me.
"Of course I am." I said.
How long have you known the Curtis'?"
"Uh.." I had to think about for a second, "Since I was three or four."
"How are you doin' in school?" He asked.
"As well as I can be." I answered.
"What kind of grades?" I couldn't tell him about all the D's I got.
"C's usually, A's in art and gym." I said. I do actually get A's in gym and art. He was writing as I was answering questions.
"So here's what we have to do. We're going to send your dad a document to sign, just so we know we have his approval. You will continue to live with them unless he doesn't sign." He explained.
"Yes, sir." I responded. He nodded, leaving the room to talk to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis. I was just relieved I could stay.
At least now I know my dad is alive. That's something that I'll never take for granted. Hopefully soon, he'll come home.
The guy left soon after, I didn't really know what else to do. I just lied down on the couch and turned on the TV.
There's wasn't anything good on, so I fell asleep while it was playing some random channel. I liked the background noise anyway.
...
I woke up to the door opening and it was Ponyboy and Two-bit.
"Here, we collected your work for ya." Ponyboy handed me a whole folders worth of papers to do. Well, at least I can spend the weekend working on these so I don't have to during school next week.
"Thanks guys." I smiled.
"No problem, kid." Two-bit patted me on the head.
I opened the folder of assignments. I internally groaned. There had to be at least fifteen papers in there. I looked through them.
Sixteen papers. Twelve of them were double sided. Seriously? I'm not going to be able to do this. Especially with how close it is to the end of the school year.
It's early June, I still have work they're going to give me and I have this. Maybe I should give up on these and hope I don't fail.
My grades shouldn't be too bad, right? I mean C's and D's, I shouldn't fail for the year. I won't stay back. Hopefully.
