Yesterday messed me up. Pinky wants to pick me up for church. I lied, saying I'll meet her there. However, at 8 a.m., she's at my door.
"Pinky, why are you here?"
"Because you're such a liar these days. You're not going to church on your own."
I turn and walk toward the kitchen. She follows, saying, "Look at me, Mae."
As I make coffee, she comes over and tries to turn me around, but I shove her away, yelling, "Stop it!"
"What happened yesterday? You were supposed to tell me how the party went."
Taking a deep breath, I answer, "Ernest hosted it. It was stellar."
"Please look at me, Mae."
When I shake my head no, she walks in front of me. Now seeing my face, she sighs, "Aww, Mae. What happened?"
I've cried so long and hard, I haven't a tear left to shed. Watching me sulk, she asks, "He still won't talk?"
"We talked."
I tell her the horrid details, but I couldn't repeat the words we're nothing and I'm nothing to him.
Pinky sighs, "It seems bad, but it had to be done. He's reacting out of pure fear. But at least you know he's not going to tell her."
Although Pinky's being comforting and encouraging, I'm traumatized right now. She insists on taking me to church.
I ask, "Do you see my face, Pinky? I can't go to church looking like this."
My phone buzzes. It's Lola texting that she needs to come over this morning, so I hurry and get dressed for church. Once in the car, I reply:
Me: Oh, sweetie, I'm on my way to church. What do you need?
Lola: I can't discuss it via text. I need to see u.
Me: ok, I'll text u once I'm home.
Lola: ok
Pinky asks, "Wonder what's that about?
"I'm not sitting through service stressed. Let me call her now."
"Hey, Mommy. I thought you were in church."
"I'm driving there now. What's going on? You have me worried."
"Someone saw you and King yesterday. He says nothing happened and your talk went well, but someone I trust said they saw you two arguing pretty badly. What happened?"
"Someone you trust more than me and Solomon?"
"How you've both been acting lately, I'll have to say yes."
My phone's on speaker, so I let my eyes plead for help to Pinky. She then says, "Hey, Mae. Thanks for picking me up."
"Lola, Aunt Pinky's with me now. I'll call you later."
"That's my Lola? Hey, pretty girl! How are you? Your mom's been boasting about your fabulous engagement party all night. I'm so jealous I couldn't attend."
"Hey, Auntie Pinky. You could've come. Sorry, I didn't think you wanted to."
"Maybe if Mae was giving it!" Pinky teases.
Lola doesn't laugh but answers, "Okay. Love you, auntie. Talk to you later, Mommy."
"Yes. Bye, honey."
Now I'm back a frazzled mess. Pinky interjects, "Let's just go inside, place our cares on the altar, and listen to what the Lord is saying today."
Service is comforting. Everyone's missed me. Our Co-Pastor, Pastor Spears, preached today. Pinky and I approached him to let him know his message was well received. Pastor Spears is single and attractive. He and I share the same birthday, two years apart. Pinky's always thought he was attracted to me. After we honor him, he asks, "You sisters hungry?"
