Drake leaves the next morning for work. He hasn't returned in over a week. He texts and calls, saying it's too busy for him to drive a couple hours back and forth to his office. I haven't heard from Trevor period, it's then I call him. He answers, "Hey ma.""Hey stranger. Where have you been? Why haven't I heard from you?"
"Company's been booming. We've hired three new guys and we're still behind schedule."
"Awesome. That's exciting!"
"Yeah."
"Well, mommy misses you. When are you coming to see me?"
"It won't be this week, so let's plan for the following weekend."
"If that's the best you can do, I guess I have no choice."
"Alright ma. My phone is ringing out of control."
"Okay. Love you Trev."
He hangs up without saying good bye. I stare at my phone a moment then sit it down.
Coffee in hand, I go sit on my porch swing. Slow I pan the neighborhood starting at Mrs Tolbert's home, then The Hopkins' old home, then Gypsy's home. Everyone's added or remodeled something. I love the cozy country look, but my home just looks outdated compared to everyone else's. It's then I text Drake:
Me: Once your work stabilizes I want to remodel my home. I'll pay too. 😉
Drake: 👌
Smiling at my phone, I look at Gypsy's home again and I realize there's a black Chevy Impala parked in her driveway. Who does she have over this early in the morning? Steady, I start swinging then only minutes later Gypsy and two men come out of her home. She points towards me and the men start heading my way. Now squinting, I sit up straight as they walk onto my porch, I stand.
One extends his hand saying, "Mrs Mae Mitzit?"
"Ms, but yes."
"I'm Detective Ling and this is Detective Garcia. We'd like to ask you some questions concerning your daughter Lola York's drowning."
"Yes, please come inside. Would you like coffee?"
"No thanks. Mrs Brasoveanu just made us some."
I nod and then text my lawyer letting him know detectives are here to see me. He texts: Answer nothing. Say, I need my lawyer present.
Detective Ling asks, "Who are you texting? Do you need to make a phone call? It's fine. We'll wait."
Eyes wide I look up answering, "Oh no. Just answering a friend's text from earlier. It's not important. ...So what's going on? Why are you here?"
Your daughter's case has been silent for all these years hoping the suspect would implicate him or herself. However, there were no leads. The investigation has taken a turn so now we're at liberty to start questioning those who were at the crime scene."
"Crime scene? What crime scene?"
"Your daughter's crime scene."
"Lola drowned. Why is there an investigation?"
"Forensics and the autopsy proves Lola didn't simply drown. There was foul play involved."
Covering my mouth, I stammer, "W-Well, what happened? I'm so confused right now. Why is this my first time hearing any of this? My baby's been dead over four years now!"
