Scorned

To no avail, I reach out to Solomon several more times. Despite what transpired I am Lola's mother. If he wants to marry my child he will respect me. I'm jumping through hoops for this wedding, yet this punk avoids me as if he'll never have to see me again in life. And I'm certain that's his plan. Once Lola marries him, in his mind, she's his. He'll now be her primary family. The rest of us will be nothing.

On top of Solomon's disrespect Stacy acts as if she's the mother of the bride. She's planned this lavish dinner party for the wedding party and parents. Neither Drake nor I want to go, but Lola insists. Drake and I decide to go together. Lola has four bridesmaids. Sheba being one and Trevor is a groomsman. The wedding party all seem well acquainted with each other. Ernest looks good, as I expected, but he's a nasty snob. However, Stacy is unnaturally kind. Solomon's dad David and his wife Leah look regal. They sit mild mannered and quiet with indiscernible smiles on their faces. Then there's my Lola, who's beaming with joy and Solomon feeds off of it.

The food and company is exquisite. Stacy has surely outdone herself. Lola then says, "Come mommy. Come daddy. I want you two to meet King's parents."

"Hi David. Hi Leah. These are my parents, Drake and my mommy Mae."

I say, "Very nice to meet you both. David is it? I always thought Solomon was named after you."

David smiles saying, "He is, but I'm David Solomon and he's Solomon David. As a child everyone called me by my middle name, so once Solomon was born his mother said we should call him King Solomon. We decided King would suffice."

We all laugh. David's voice is warm and comforting. Him and Leah are very pleasant people. Lola then says, "Speaking of King, where is he?"

We then spot him laughing and talking with his groomsmen. David then says, "I'll go get him."

"Thanks David." says Lola.

Once David approaches him, Solomon looks directly at me. Rolling his eyes in his head he follows David over to us. Lola locks arms with him saying, "You haven't hung around us the entire dinner party. What's up with that?" She glances at me as she awaits his answer.

"It's not like that. I was entertaining our guests on that side of the room, while you accommodate those on this side. It's teamwork Lo." He says winking at his parents.

I have to shack myself because I'm staring at him, entranced. He plays it off well, because he doesn't acknowledge me at all.

It's then I say, "Solomon may I speak with you for a brief, just you and I. We haven't had a mother/son heart to heart yet."

David laughs, "Sounds like you've been a bad son. I'm glad I'm not you."

Solomon's giving me the squint of death. Quickly, fixing his face he says, "I hope not."

Lola taunts, "Oh he is. Whoop him good mommy."

Locking arms with him, I escort us to a private area. He keeps wiping his face and huffing. We're in the parking lot when I say, "Solomon I know you wished this didn't happen, but it did. We need to talk about it."

"Please tell me what we need to talk about?"

"Solomon we slept together..."

Laughing he interrupts, "Are you fucking kidding me right now?"

"...and now you're marrying my daughter. We can't just pretend it didn't happen."

"So what should we do Mae? Go in there and announce we fucked? Please tell me what you think we should do?"

"Well, of course not, but we need to come to terms with it. You treating me like one day you'll wake up and I won't exist, isn't how this works for damn sure! I'm Lola's mother. I'm probably the person you'll deal with more than anyone in her entire family. So we have to get a grip on this reality and deal with it civilly."

"You're right. Okay, I can do that."

"Do what?"

"Coexist with you, civilly."

"What does that mean?"

"Are you fucking with me right now? I'm agreeing to your terms! Now you don't comprehend your own terms?"

"My civil means we deal with it truthfully not like it never happened. Start treating me like I'm her mother not an ex you're stuck tolerating."

"In due time Mae. You're the one acting like it meant something. It meant nothing. You're not an ex, you're nothing. We're nothing. We fucked up while we were drunk, so let's leave it at that. I can. Can you? I'm angry because you're wimping around me like I need to coddle and comfort you whenever I see you. That's never going to happen! We're two adults who fucked up real bad! I can accept that, and move forward. Can you?"

"It's not that easy Solomon..."

"It is Mae! You just don't want it to be! I love Lola, Mae! I only want your daughter and I'm not feeling anyone who's trying to jeopardize that. I don't care if that person is her mother. You feel me? ...So now we're talking. Our talk is, we both acknowledge we were wrong, so let's put this behind us and move forward. That's our talk. We agree. Now let's go back to my engagement party."

Solomon walks away, but I run in front of him saying, "I'll tell her!"

Teeth gritted, he grabs my throat saying, "And I'll fucking kill you!"

Shaking himself, he quickly releases me then hurries off. I stand there quaking. I want to leave but my purse and keys are inside with Drake. Before returning I stop in the restroom and fix myself up, then walk up to Lola, Drake, and Solomon, with an arduous smile.

Lola says, "There you are mommy!"

"My dad's leaving. I'll be back." Solomon says then walks away.

Lola stares his way, then cuts her eyes back to me asking, "All is well?"

With a huge grin I answer, "All is well sweetie."

"Yeaaah!" She hops my way hugging me.

"Well, mommy's going to head out. Drake has a long ride home."

"Okay! Love you guys. Drive safe."
